My experience with the Octobrush

Hey guys! Im very new, and this is my first guide, so take this with a grain of salt, not only because of that, but because im not an expert at Splatoon. However, i do have over 200000+ points from the Octobrush. That said, i'll do my best to outline the strengths and weaknesses of the Octobrush.

General overview:

This weapon is very similar to the Inkbrush, though plays very differently. For one, its slightly more powerful and slightly slower than its cousin, and less ink efficient. Its sub weapons and special weapons are very well suited for ranked matches, where it plays two roles well (More on those later.). You always, ALWAYS need to watch out for weapons with higher range than you, (Pretty much everything except the Inkbrushes and Aerosprays) as you'll most likely get killed if they have decent aim, so brush to flee, or to find cover. However, if you manage to get close, its quite easy to get a kill.

Strengths:

The Octobrush is an amazing weapon in close-up situations. Though not as fast as the Inkbrush, its speed is still quite amazing, allowing you to zip around the battlefield. This supports its sub weapon, as you can place Squid Beacons around the map quickly to support your teammates. The Kraken only furthers its close range ability, because if someone catches you off guard, its feeding time for the Kraken.

Weaknesses:

Range. You must either be really far out of range of the opponents, or super close to kill them. Dont try and play chicken by rolling towards your enemies unless they're distracted. It also has poor ink efficiency, so be careful with how much you flick it, and constantly go back into your ink to recharge. This is made more clear by the Squid Beacons, which take nearly all of your ink.

Strategies:

The two most effective strategies ive found to be are hyper-offense or turtle-ing, usually switching between the two depending on how the battlefield looks. Start out by going to a side-alley or other area thats hard for the opponent to reach, and drop a few squid beacons. From there, your mission is to destroy. Find your enemies and kill them, letting you and your allies advance to ink turf/cover the splat zone/ride the tower/carry the rainmaker. Its okay if you mess up a few times, thats why you places the squid beacons, so that you can get back to your job asap. If your opponents push you back, stay at a choke point, preferably up a ledge or around a corner, and kill your enemies as they come by, perhaps with the Kraken. Or if they neglected your squid beacons, use them and sneak up behind your opponents.

Recommended abilities:

Ink Saver (Main) and Ink Saver (Sub) are almost necessary for the Octobrush. This helps its poor ink efficiency, and has your Squid Beacons take up less ink, letting you place them faster. Special Charge Up can be helpful as the Kraken takes longer to charge than others. Ninja Squid is recommended, as you'll be dropping back into your ink very often to recharge, and it allows you to flee from foes who out-range you. Damage Up will help you get kills more consistently, and Stealth Jump can help you if your Squid Beacons are under attack, as it makes your landing point invisible, allowing you to surprise attack your opponent. Quick Super Jump synergizes well with this. Run Speed Up is a maybe, because im not sure if it increases your speed while 'rolling' with the Octobrush. Ink Recovery Up and Special Duration up are also viable. Personally, i have shining gear with Stealth Jump, Special Charge Up, Damage Up, Run Speed Up, Ink Saver (Main) and Ink Saver (Sub).

Conclusion:

The Octobrush is a good weapon with proper application. The mix of hyper-offense and turtle-ing makes it a support weapon overall, and the sub and special weapons only make it more clear. I hope you enjoyed this quick guide about the Octobrush.

Great guide. Really explained the Octobrush in depth and had a lpt of useful tips. I will definitely be testing out the Octobrush next time I play Splatoon.
Although it was a quick guide, it was very detailed and explained how to use the octobrush perfectly. It's an ambush weapon that has an easier time in direct combat than the inkbrush, but you still don't want to engage the enemy head on. You managed to give tips and ways to exploit the enemy and maximize the effectiveness of an ambush. Great guide!
