It is a cold, dark night. Outside your window, rain is pouring down hard. You can hear your dog whimpering as the sound of thunder roars across the neighborhood. The only light that is on in your house is your laptop. You are wrapped in a blanket, eyes bloodshot, scanning the Squidboards forums, trying to find the next hip, new Splatoon tournament for you and your squad to join. Suddenly, you see it. A tournament, unlike any other, has appeared before your eyes. You see the word "Supernova", in big, blue and purple colors, and you suddenly you begin to cry. You've never been so happy in your entire life.

Welcome to Supernova: a three-stage, Sunday tournament with more group stages than anyone has the patience to play. If you're interested in competing in a tournament that mixes the regular formula up a little bit, then you've come to the right place!

How to Sign Up
Just click the "Registration Form" button above, and fill it out! However, you might want to check out the rules of the tournament first, even if you've competed in other western tournaments before. There are some interesting changes which you might want to check out before signing up!

So What's Different, Anyway?
Two main things: the tournament's structure (three stages instead of one or two), and time limits. You can read about both of these things a lot more in-depth in the rules document, but the general idea is to give the western tournament scene something fresh and exciting while also being accommodating to the concerns of previous tournament-goers in their experiences with other tournaments (lots of delays, long periods of downtime, etc). This tournament strives to accomplish both tasks, while still being a fun, enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Tournament Format
Stage 1
  • Competing teams will be placed into groups of four, and will compete against each other in a round-robin style.
    • Seeding will be mostly random, but TOs will ensure that no one group is overloaded with super-strong teams, whenever possible.
  • This stage will last 3 rounds. Each round will last 35 minutes (with the exception of the very first round, which will last 40 minutes.)
  • For each match, both teams will play 5 games against each other; the team with the most games won at the end will take the win.
    • This is NOT a Best-of-5. All five matches must be played, regardless of how many games a team has won during that match. This is so that game differentials can be used more effectively to rank teams with the same win-loss ratings.
  • The top 2 teams from each group will move on to the next stage.
Stage 2
  • Winning teams from the previous stage will once again be placed into groups of four.
    • Teams who won from the same group in Stage 1 will be placed in different groups for Stage 2.
  • The exact same rules apply to this stage as they did to the previous stage.
  • The top 2 teams from each group will move on to the final stage.
Final Stage
  • Winning teams from the previous stage will be seeded into a single-elimination bracket.
    • Teams who won from the same group in Stage 2 will be separated to ensure they don't compete against each other in the first round of the bracket.
  • All matches in this stage will be BO5 (Best-of-5) games, with the exception of the grand finals, which will be BO7 (Best-of-7).

"What about the maps? How's that gonna work out?"
In standard fashion, maps will be chosen Halo-style; which is to say, the TOs will manually create a list of every map-mode combination to be played throughout the tournament, which will then be played in that exact order during each round. The map list will be released no later than 24 hours before the tournament begins.

"Is there going to be a tournament stream?"
Uh... I guess? What an oddly specific question of you to ask.

I am planning on doing a tournament stream (which is why, as you may notice when signing up, I ask for stream links on the registration form), but as my streaming experience is rather low, this is sort of up in the air. In any case, watch this space!

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask either here or in our Discord server! And when in doubt, read the rules document for the tournament! I've linked it like 30 times by now, but they are bound to have the answers to most of your questions.

I hope to see you on tournament day! :D
