the tetris effect is when you do a singular activity repetitively for so long that it starts to affect your thoughts. like for example, if you've been playing a lot of tetris recently, you might see a row of objects and think about how well they would stack together, or you might close your eyes and see images of tetris in it, or you might start having dreams where you play tetris. this can happen with any task and it can have positive and negative effects on your psyche but this is a thread for talking about it in the silly way, where you play an unholy amount of a video game and start to think in video game logic :)

as for me... i haven't experienced this in splatoon specifically but i did have a moment where after playing sky cotl almost every day for 4 months straight i was walking around in a mall with my grandma and then i lost her for a few seconds, and my first thought was to honk so her name would pop up on screen. and then i remembered that i am in real life

Yeah, exactly once. Funnily or unsurprisingly enough it was with the game the term comes from in the first place. There was like a week where I grinded out Tetris for the GameBoy and I, exactly as it was described, saw vaguely square objects and thought about how I'd place blocks on top of them. There have been games I've grinded harder but none of them have ever done something similar.

I used to play Minecraft for hours at a time and eventually, whenever I looked at the ground, I would imagine the dirt coming out in blocks 💀
The same happened with racing games, whenever I would be on the highway, I would see "trails" emitting from cars that passed mine :p

Hydra Splatling :)

Started working out because of Hydra. Whenever I read something and there's a Hydra-related word, I think of my beloved. Been subtly referencing Hydra in my work <3

Whenever I looked at an object like a traffic cone I would think about how Kirby would use it in "Kirby and the Forgotten Land".
That was around 2 years ago though but I have more recent example from last year where I saw someone take out a black umbrella and thought "They look like they're holding an Undercover Brella".

There was one time right after Breath of the Wild came out that I was at the gas station and I looked at the actual, in real life moon to see if there was going to be a blood moon that night.

Yep, after playing The Trail Hogs I was at work and thinking about the Trail Hog bike all the time. So much so that I went out to ride my Hog and went to the beach. Didn't bother going back to work that day! Hogging in cool!

+1 on the sky cotl bit.
played so much that doing things live waving and thinking made me start to do them like the emotes in game.
often I'd realise it and stop myself in time lmao

and another for Zelda tears of the kingdom, I kept trying to jump through the ceiling while playing other games.

The other night my friend and I got on for Splatfest and had a bunch of bad games that resulted in losses. My friend doesn't get on that much these days, so I felt pretty bad that he was feeling discouraged. That night, I had a dream that we were playing Splatoon 3 on some rooftop stage that doesn't exist (though it looked pretty cool) and I was dominating the enemy team with great splat streaks. Perhaps I was making up for the rough session the night before in my dreams! Actually, I played quite a bit better than usual the next day, my aim has been solid for the few days since the dream.

does the time i felt the need to remind myself to keep bipedal form while walking over drain grates so i wouldn’t swim form through and end up stuck in the sewers, in real life, count
so it seems this is just a permanent state for me and i will have this reaction every time i go downtown. 🆒

I tend to view nature differently after playing pikmin. The micro size characters on a earthly landscape gets me to imagine the world at a smaller perspective, especially if I am near water features.

It is a fun way to pass the time viewing the world, while also being being bored at the same time.
Looking at any one place Thinking: How could I make a pikmin level out of this?

It is interesting because you could make it out of any place, even places you might not want to be.
