Haven't played Splatoon in a while and trying to join back! Some questions as well

Hi. So I got splatoon a bit more than a year ago and haven't played in little less than a year. The game looks much more fun now, so I am trying to get back in. So what has changed in about 10 months? I also just learned about the more competitive section of the game as well. My question is it still worth trying to get good and play comptetively after all this time? Or just play casually?
