Nearly gave me a heart attack there with that title! I'm not surprised the Fandom wiki has plagiarism, especially given what a good source Inkipedia is. Fandom is generally a godawful website and terrible for actually, y'know, hosting fan wikis, and I'm really glad Splatoon has not only an independent wiki, but a really well managed one. A good handful of other games I'm into have independent wikis now (Rain World has a wiki on Miraheze, and I don't remember what hosting specifically Hollow Knight is using nowadays, but I know they forked off from Fandom a while back), I just wish it was more widespread. My deepest wish is that the Warrior cats wiki would go independent...

aye, fandom is so bad... the only positive thing I can say about them is the community side that get implemented on each of their wikis. for young people that can't hang out on social media accounts and get into communities relating to the things they like that it's a bit of a good spot to find like minded people.

I used to hang out on the sky cotl fandom community a lot but it always rubbed me the wrong way that TGC (the makers of the game) gave the right to that fandom wiki to be their official wiki. I mean just pay for a proper one if you're gonna do that!

I... have never heard of that happening like, ever. Maybe I'm just out of touch with wiki specific communities, but that seems... bizarre. And weird. The closest that comes to mind for me was the Control Fandom wiki looking like they were going to be allowed to become an official wiki, except that it was under the requirement that they fork from Fandom and be hosted somewhere else, and the entire thing ended up falling through anyways (Sigh... Control isn't a game that necessarily demands a really well hosted wiki, but it's still disappointing. I love the game a lot and would've loved for it to go independently hosted for the wiki).

Warriors gets somewhat close to being an "official" wiki, since we know the authors will reference the Fandom wiki (Horrifying, horrifying thing to know. Warrior cats is incredibly poorly written for a large swathe of reasons but the sheer face of the matter that the authors themselves do not have a series bible and instead rely on a fan wiki for information on occasion is genuinely a nightmare. Especially given how the wiki itself can be... pretty bad at times. It's gotten better over the years but if you ever want to go down a rabbit hole for silly preteen centric cat books that suck you can look into the Dovewing eyes debacle for the wiki specifically), but even then it is not an official resource and is not regarded as such.

All that to say. I do not like that. That is a weird thing to do

Ughhhh fandom has been been so hostile to community-run wikis even back when it was still wikia. I was part of an another community's effort a while back to move their community wiki off fandom to something community-hosted, and they had to be soooo sneaky about it, taking care to post absolutely nothing publicly about the project but instead to migrate everything to the new wiki first and then privately talk 1:1 to each individual in the community (it was a relatively small community but that was still no small feat) to let them know what was going on so they could quietly contribute and change any links they had to point to the new wiki before Fandom would notice what was happening, lol. It was more or less successful, but that was only because we had heard and learned from the horror stories of other communities trying to move off Fandom and how contributors/community members were harassed and threated by staff and so on.

it's not always a perfect fix but if you use firefox or chrome, get this extension! it directs you to the non-wikia-hosted wiki for any given franchise if one exists, and redirects you to breezewiki/one of its mirrors if one doesn't

much like twitter i'm deadnaming that website forever. you cant just call yourself "fandom" that's confusing and stupid

wait what?! I already hated fandom due to the amount of ads that makes browsing the site down right frustrating (especially on mobile). But this is just down right scummy

Yeah, it's awful, though I guess it's pretty in-character for them to do anything to keep people generating free content for their ad-ridden platform so they can keep profiting off of others' volunteer efforts to help their community.

finally got around to watching the video like i said i would and... wow

honestly i'm dying to see what wikia's response will be. like, they've gotta respond to plagiarism, right? but i don't see them wanting to acknowledge that some of their wikis are plagiarized from objectively better indie wikis on the same topics. but they gotta. lol what if they refuse to do anything and that finally leads to the downfall of wikia? i am not a lawyer tho i'm just a guy who likes to engage in wishful thinking

and i also find myself wanting to pick the brains of the plagiarizing editors. i won't, because that classifies as harassment and me getting involved as a bystander won't help matters, but like... what are they accomplishing here? are they just stubbornly clinging to wikia and they want their wiki to be the best it can be, but they're unwilling to write the content themselves? are even the admins literal children who haven't learned about plagiarism yet, so they think copying good articles is just How You Make a Good Wiki? is this all a wild plot to get the splatoon wikia deleted by packing it with so much plagiarized content that even wikia staff admits it needs to go?? i want to study these people

also, squidboards (briefly) mentioned in the video 🤯
