Question about in-game names.

This is probably a silly question, but does anyone know how in-game names work in Splatoon? I've been keeping up with the game for a while, but I can't seem to find any information on it. Judging by the footage I've seen, I'm thinking that it doesn't go off of your NNID (due to people using common first names like Chris, Billy, etc), but possibly your mii name? I'm mainly wondering because I'd like to know if it's possible to change my name if I feel like doing so later on.

It'll probably go off your Mii name, or you'll be able to name them yourselves. I really would hate if it went of my NNID since it's "FurryRedPanda". (TeddyBearYoshi was based off of Mario Kart 8.)
