The Consensus:
While sitting back reflecting on all of the memories I've had so far with Splatoon as a whole, it has reassured me of Splatoon’s upcoming 10 year anniversary for both its announcement trailer this Summer, as well as the official release for the first game next Summer.
With this in mind, I thought of a potential opportunity for Nintendo. Because there have been retro Amiibos before in the past, (such as 8bit Mario from the franchise’s 25 years active) I thought to myself; what if Nintendo released some form of “Anniversary” Amiibo of our cherished inkling?
I could really see something like this selling, as there haven’t been many limited edition amiibos or even many Splatoon amiibos so far in this current game.
And thinking this even further, I conceptualized all the possible characters that could be the template of this “Anniversary” figure. Of what iconic and memorable likeness would best represent the spirit of this monumental occasion? And then it hit me; is this not the perfect opportunity to release an Agent 3 Amiibo line?
A Rebranded Splatfest:
Because there are already Splatoon 1 Amiibos, an anniversary figure would be none other than Agent 3; the franchise’s flagship character who started it all. Over the course of both stories, Agent 3 has really evolved, and we have seen both the good and bad side of him.
So, what better way to announce this Amiibo than with a rehashed Hero vs Villain Splatfest? If Nintendo decides to choose this as one of their fest topics, then this would be a perfect opportunity to design an Agent 3 Amiibo around the theme. People may even refer to this as Agent 3 vs Corrupted Agent 3, completely re-branding it as "new" due to its influence with the event, which would still revolve around the general "good vs evil".
Price, Marketing, & Release Window:
This Amiibo line could release in December around Christmas, or in January after New Years.
There could be two different versions of this Amiibo; a Splatoon 3 designed Agent 3, as well as a more rare and limited edition “classic” version of Agent 3, which is more representative of Agent 3’s design in Splatoon 1, commemorating a 10 year run with the franchise as a whole. (There would of course be a girl and a boy version of each)
Nintendo could charge $30 a pop instead of $15, given the extra effort on details and effects, as well as these being called “Anniversary”.
Nintendo could market this through a Hero vs Villain Splatfest, as well as designing a trailer involving both games and Splatatacks. “Choose your side” would be the marketing slogan for these, which would also advertise the Splatfest as well. (Both would promote each other)
Amiibo Designs: (How the Hero/Villain theme of Agent 3 would work as two separate units)
Retro Agent 3:
Representing the Hero side would be “Classic Agent 3”. This of course shows us a more retro look of the character. Agent 3’s hair color would be tie dye, which is a mix of colors from the other Splatoon 1 Amiibo characters, offering a remix style. (Blue, Purple, Green, Orange, Pink, & Yellow)
“Classic Agent 3” sports a trusty Splattershot with his nostalgic “Hero Shot Replica” skin which can be redeemed in-game. For gear received in-game, players will get Agent 3’s cape/robe and neck scarf as the shirt, digitized ear muffs as the head piece, and digital kicks as the shoes. All this gear would have orange stripe-accents, reminiscent of Agent 3’s OG look. These will light up in the day on your Amiibo, showing that this version is among the “Light”.
Corrupted Agent 3:
Now, exploring the Octo Expansion, we know that Agent 3 has gotten his mind jacked. So, this other anniversary Amiibo would show off the corrupted “Villain” side of Agent 3.
Corrupted Agent 3 would of course be visually represented from his/her likeness in Splatoon 2, so you won’t get any classic details here.
However, there’s still some goodies to be had in the content department. This twisted Agent 3 Amiibo would sport a “Villain Shot Replica” of the Splattershot, a brand new skin that’s digitized in turquoise accents, reflective of Agent 3’s hair color in the Octo Expansion fight. Corrupted Agent 3’s hair would also be turquoise as well, matching this style. Twisted Agent 3 would also have turquoise accents in his/her gear.
Speaking of gear, this is where the big differentiation comes in. Wicked Agent 3 would have the same exact attire as regular Agent 3; except now equipped with the mind-jack apparatus that makes up this character’s identity. This Amiibo's attire will glow in the dark, illuminating the headpiece, which will go quite nicely with the bright glowing eyes while under the control of Tartar. This of course fits the tone of “Villain” with the dark.
