Splatoon In Minecraft With Creator SethBling

Splatoon has captured the imaginations of gamers and artists worldwide. Now, what happens when Splatoon catches the eye of a world-class Minecraft player? The result is a cleverly, faithfully, and charmingly designed Splatoon mini-game within the fertile realm of Minecraft.

We were able to chat with prominent Youtuber and Minecraft star SethBling regarding his Splatoon port. According to Seth, the game first demonstrated project potential after he saw streams and discovered how fun the game looked. He also commented that it inspired him because of how well suited Splatoon was to be recreated in Minecraft. At first glance, the intricacies of Splatoon seem hard to transfer but let’s take a look at what SethBling created and learn that his efforts accomplished a great feat.

What we have with Splatoon in Minecraft is the fruit of a dedicated mission to transfer inklings to another world. The game starts players in a lobby where you can select teams and equip yourself with 1 of 3 weapons that everyone will immediately recognize.

First up is the Splattershot which is rendered in Minecraft via the snowball. It works just as you’d imagine with the medium range and high fire rate we expect from the weapon. Next up is the Splat Charger which is craftily represented by Minecraft’s bow and arrow. Fully pull back the arrow for a 1-hit kill on enemies and lay down ink in long, narrow straights. Lastly, the widely appreciated Splat Roller is ported over in the form of Minecraft’s trusty sword. After you’re armed and ready for action, the game can be initiated.

The map that is loaded for eager Splatoon in Minecraft players is the familiar Port Mackerel. Seth chose this map because he was able to get the layout down perfectly whereas it would have been exceedingly more difficult to render some of the more intricate maps in Minecraft. With that being said, it is indeed Port Mackerel as we know it, with the only absence being the moving trucks in the middle of the map.

The same accuracy and dedication put into crafting the weapons is at play in the creation of the game's mechanics. The satisfaction of covering turf is not encroached upon in this rendition of Splatoon and neither is thwarting foes with your deadly ink.

If you think your days as a squid are limited to WiiU console gameplay, you'll are happily mistaken. Squid mechanics are present in full force with the glory of extra speed and reloads on friendly territory. Climbing up walls and rushing through the game’s map works with the intuitive grace characteristic of Splatoon. Also, the squid form in Minecraft Splatoon looks absolutely awesome.

One of the more unique examples of game mechanics comes in the form of the scoreboard. Splatoon in Minecraft has a numerical scoreboard that displays the percentage of covered territory by either team at all times. When we asked SethBling about this unique feature, he stated that he wanted a proxy for the squid icons featured at the top of the Splatoon screen.

While the squid icons communicate battle information, they don’t do it with the explicit accuracy of the Minecraft scoreboard. This is a remarkable change for a couple reasons. It puts explicit pressure on the team facing a deficit to make up the percentage of territory. In the dying seconds of the game, it is overwhelmingly apparent what last ditch efforts needs to be made to salvage the game. Second, the scoreboard becomes a key focal point during the game because of how definitive the data is. It makes for an interesting dynamic and one has to wonder how Splatoon would be if the scoreboard feature was numerical like in SethBling’s rendition.

SethBling has done a lot of work in this masterful mini-game. After taking in all of the effort required for such a project, we asked him about some of the ups and downs of the process. The greatest challenge he faced was the remarkable fact that he had no access to a WiiU and the actual game. He even went on to say that he never once has played Splatoon on the WiiU! He enlisted the help of fellow Minecraft fan (and avid Splatoon player) PyroPuncher for consultation in making sure the game and mechanics were spot-on.

As for his favorite parts of the endeavour, he noted that test playing the game was easily and unsurprisingly the most fun part, as with most of his Minecraft mini-games. We also hopefully asked him if he planned on making making any further developments to the game. He responded that he doesn’t usually return to completed projects but it is not out of the question for him to return and add some more maps to the experience.

SethBling really has done something wonderful here by taking the magic of Splatoon and spreading it wider than many would have anticipated. It is an absolute treat for any fans of Splatoon and even more so for Minecraft players. Wanna check out Seth’s masterpiece in action? Check out this link to witness Splatoon In Minecraft.

Lol this is pretty cool. I don't play Minecraft online though so I'll probably pass. Still- looks neat nonetheless.
