Two things:

1) I'm scared for how Nintendo will present the game: the game mode they choose will determine how Splatoon is viewed to the general audience: Using Turf War will push their original agenda of Splatoon being a strictly casual game. Using Splat Zones will serve as a window into the competitive community and ink a much more intense and strategically involved image for Splatoon.

2) I'm upset to hear Nintendo had already invited players. I understand why they chose the faces they did: they want to make Splatoon seem fun and easy to pick up. By choosing comedians and personalities, they'll have the opportunity to make Splatoon seem like the next ~HILARIOUS EASY PARTY GAME~. Honestly, they can't keep that boat afloat unless they run local multiplayer that isn't 1v1 offline.

I wish they'd taken the effort to pick the top 1% of ranked players and have them face off in Splat Zones.
It's no Egoraptor, but it's pretty neat.

I'll be watching 'cuz Grumps and Black Nerd Comedy, so I guess that worked on me. ;)

1) Turf Wars is one of the major differentiators between Splatoon and other shooters. If we're concerned about how a general audience views it, I think "Fresh!" would be favourable, instead of "Oh so it's a King of the Hill game". If more people get interested at all, then they will discover Ranked on their own. They also avoid consumer confusion/disappointment due to not being able to immediately access the game-mode that they bought the game for [had they advertised Splat Zones].

Also, while you are right that it is easier for a newbie to join in on Turf Wars and not be completely useless, I think writing Turf Wars off as "Casual" isn't exactly fair. Just because it isn't ranked doesn't mean it can't be competitive.

2) Well the event is for more than just Splatoon, it'd be a bit weird to invite Splatoon specialists to a tournament based on general gaming ability.

PS. I really really want LAN play to get released, please Nintendo!

I'm sick of turf war being written off as casual. Come custom games, turf war will be just as much a part of the competitive metagame as splat zones. And it's a way more fun mode.

After some thought, I realized all of the game statistics from the Competitive section does apply to Turf Wars as much as it does to Splat Zones, so there is just as much mental involvement if the inkling wishes. I was a bit too harsh on Turf Wars there. It is absolutely one of the reasons Splatoon is unique.

I suppose I would just like Nintendo to get some players that could have metagame discussions on the fly. :p

P.S.: I forgot ranked even had a level cap, great point there
