Now that the switch is over 7 years old, (feel old yet?) and that it's been confirmed we're getting a switch 2, what are your best hopes for a new console, realistic or otherwise? I thought a few neat ideas could be backwards compatibility with wii and GCN, and to bring back miiverse and street pass, because those were so much fun.

I don't think they're going to keep the "Switch" title for the next console, honestly.
After the Wii U, Nintendo took a very different approach to a lot of things such as their marketing and their home menu UI.
I don't see them continuing to use "Switch" the same way they did with "Wii".
Though, I'm not really sure what they would call it instead since we don't even know what will set the new console apart from the Switch.

(jokes aside though: i'd love if it was more customizable than the switch, maybe with actual themes or another badge arcade. also seconding the streetpass, though i'm not sure if they're gonna go all-in on portability like they did the 3DS)

I don't have any thoughts on a big gimmick for the system, I'd rather let Nintendo surprise me on that front. But there are some smaller details I'd like to see.

The most important thing I want from the Switch 2 is the ability to run Switch 1 titles at a higher clockspeed. Don't downclock like New 3DS did. That may not fix every bad port, but hopefully it'll help with some of them. My concern is that most titles that should be running on Switch 2 have already been ported to Switch 1, poorly, and won't get re-ported. Instead we'll get ports of newer games that are again too much for Switch 2 to handle. So I just want the back catalog to run nicely and I can go back and play those games.

Variable refresh rate could go a long way. Not because I expect games to support high frame rates on Switch, but because this can also help low framerates feel better. Or even if not variable, just supporting 40Hz could be good, Steam Deck has this and it's a solid middle ground for titles that can hit it.

Also, give me Hall Effect analog sticks. I remember when 'Nintendium' was the meme to describe how durable Nintendo products were, I don't know what happened to the build quality this generation but it's atrocious how bad Joycons are.

This might be too niche to be worthwhile, but it could be cool if JoyCon2s could be mounted vertically for shmups and DS games on NSO. The DS library is full of classics that are semi-inaccessible just because most hardware you could try to emulate them on won't actually be an ideal experience. But that's kind of a fairly limited use case to justify a feature like this, so I doubt it'd happen.

The first obvious thing I'm hoping the next Nintendo console has is backward compatibility, and to be able to transfer non-cloud save data to the new console. I worked way too hard on my Pokemon Sword to 100% complete the dex and I don't want to lose that.

Secondly, I want durable Joycons, I mean ones that won't drift after a week of use, and please make it so the Joycons don't turn off unexpectedly if they still have battery life remaining. And in speaking of quality, I want them to make the console actually have a bigger memory natively, it's especially important now since there are many games with huge memory demands.

Other than that, the only other thing I want is an actually stable online. Early in the Switch's lifespan, I had some trouble playing online even in non-Splatoon games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and ARMS just because they used someone else's Switch as the host. No more freezing due to the internet during Smash Bros. matches, please.

My left joystick on my old switch started after a few years of use and a few months of abuse from my finger

I agree with this, especially now that we have to pay for online, they need to put more effort into the online. The current p2p system is absolute garbage, and i'd say if we have to pay for it, they need to have dedicated servers.

This is mostly a software issue, down to how each individual game implements its netcode.

The only thing the Switch 2 can do in hardware is include an ethernet port by default instead of requiring a USB adapter. OLED already did this so I imagine Switch 2 will too. But including the port won't necessarily get people to use it. I don't think the venn diagram had much overlap between "people who understand why a wired connection is important" and "people who won't spend $10 on a USB adapter".

~Ideas??~

-Wider screen
-Maybe some version have attachable LED lights?!! (IDK if this already exists)
-Different console shapes in general
-I personally disconnect a lot (sorry if you played wit me), so stronger connection to wi-fi somehow??
-It should come in certain bundles that provide you with a wall mount so you can admire it in all it's Switch-y glory

:)

I think Nintendo is going to go with a hybrid approach: Have a new console while keeping the Switch as a budget option. Nintendo specifically phrased it as "The Switch's successor", I think if they're doing a Switch 2 it would be something like "The improved Switch model". I think while having a portable console the level of the PS4 Pro/PS5 is definitely possible, I don't think it's the most sustainable especially price-wise, cutting the portable aspect however is definitely doable. They can put all the big projects on the new console (Which I'll call the Focus) and have the switch as something for newer developers indie devs or more simpler projects, sort of like what the PS Vita turned into. Nintendo usually does this for successful consoles, instead of outright killing the predecessor they slowly phase it out. I don't think they'd want to do anything too crazy with the Focus's gimmick, as cool as something like VR would be, I think Nintendo has learned from the Wii U that gimmicks don't sell consoles. I definitely wish there was more customizability, with Themes, Badges, Folders and so-on. Switch Online and the Virtual Console will definitely transfer, maybe there'll be a new version that lets you keep one subscription over both consoles?

StreetPass for the Nintendo Switch successor would be golden, shame it wasn't included in the Nintendo Switch. My golden goose would be the return of Miiverse, but that's a stretch and we all know Miiverse wasn't perfect. Miiverse was good for Splatoon 1, and I would love to see what the developers could cook up for StreetPass support in Splatoon 4.

omg I miss streetpass so much (though it wouldn't be as useful to me now that I work from home), when I worked retail it was so fun to bring my 3DS to work and passively collect streetpasses (it was also kind of fun to try to figure out which people were coworkers and which coworkers they were and then go spy on their animal crossing houses. lol I had a legit moment of "oh man I need to clean up my animal crossing house because I'm probably going to streetpass one of my managers tomorrow and I don't want them to think I live like this!!")

Sorry that was. totally an unnecessary deviation but yes. a reimagining of streetpass has the potential to be amazing.

damn i have a 3DS but i got it in 2017 and never got it connected to the internet, and now the online support is gone. i feel really sad that i missed out on a bunch of cool features like streetpass and miiverse.
so it would be cool to see streetpass or a successor on the switch 2. as for miiverse, i don't know if it should come back.

As nifty as StreetPass was, I think it was a product of its time that just wouldn't work half as well today. Assuming that the Switch 2 also does not fit in your pocket, not enough people will be taking it out and about with them. Plus today everyone's already got a smartphone in their pocket, so many people wouldn't carry around a second device anyway.

My experience with StreetPass was that I could get plenty of hits for the most popular games when the system first came out and I was in college, but after I graduated I wasn't getting nearly as many hits outside of campus. And half the games in my library I never got hits for at all, which was honestly rather disappointing to have StreetPass exist as a feature in those games that I simply didn't get to interact with.

StreetPass was a cooler idea on paper than it was in practice. I do have some nostalgia for it, but I don't think it's worth trying again today.
