We see that Splatoon showed us the evolution of Inklings, starting from a helpless squid stranded on land to eventually evolving into the humanoid form we see in the games, with the added bonus of transforming into squids to swim in ink. Now onto the theory!

So, there exist convergence evolution, basically an evolution of two different animals that went a similar or even the same path. The reason why I mention this is because of the existence of Octolings. While the octopus is very intelligent and can hold water in its "lungs", even it will die if left without saltwater for too long. What basically happened is that most octopuses were left stranded in the middle of continents where saltwater drained after the worldwide war that flooded the world. Just like Inklings, Octolings evolved from a cephalopod, in this case, the octopus into their more humanoid form with the ability to transform into octopuses to swim in ink.

After the evolution for Octolings has finished, Octarian as a species didn't exist yet and it would be a couple of centuries before Octolings wouldn't be the only existing Octarians. An Octoling got their tentacle cut off during battle on accident, this was before the time that weapons that use ink as ammunition existed and as such, it was during the time when Salmonids destroyed cities with ease. That Octoling brought the tentacle back to base for an unknown reason, little did anyone know, that tentacle eventually became an Octotrooper. The term Octarian still didn't exist back then, it wouldn't exist until more tentacles became their own separate beings with physical differences from each other.

As time went on, more and more Octolings decided to cut their tentacles like it was the trendy thing to do during their times. This resulted in the discovery of Octocopters, Octosnipers and many more physical differences that the separated tentacles can take. With way too many names related to Octo, the Octolings and other species collectively decided to name the entire group as Octarian, after the naming was done, the Octolings decided to include themselves under the Octarian term as well since they are the host from which the living tentacles come from.

Thank you for reading this long theory of mine. This is just my take on how Octarians as a species came to be.
