Back with another theory, this one is shorter since Salmonids are not as interesting or complex as the Octarians.

So the Salmonids, a species of fish bent on destroying cephalopods at all costs, not even caring about self-preservation. While they do have a culture, they seem to distance themselves from the other species found in Splatoon, but this was more by choice rather than forced. The newest Salmon Run stage does give some insight into who they are. They were possibly just regular salmon long ago before the Ark Polaris failed to work and then crashed, we already see that English is an ancient language in the Splatoon universe. The reason why I mention this is because there are signs in English that are giving warnings about bears. It could be possible that salmon evolved to be able to attack bears. As a result, they became more of a warrior species as their evolution went on throughout the ages.

Their diet could've also changed in order to improve their survival, they initially only went after Inklings to eat them, but now they go after all cephalopods. Now, this might not make sense on why they have trade agreements with the Octarians considering Octarians are cephalopods themselves. However, here is the key thing to know, trade agreements =/= alliance. Just because the Salmonids and Octarians trade, doesn't mean they are allied in any way, they are simply trading for items that they both need the most, that's it.

Here is the biggest difference the Salmonids have with the cephalopod species in Splatoon aside from the type of animal which is that Salmonids don't have Inkling equivalents and they simply don't need to because Salmonids are nomadic species, unlike Inklings and Octarians where they set up civilizations. Salmonids also have the ability to survive in water, something that Inklings and Octarians don't have the luxury of. Salmonids don't need humanoid arms when they can just use their fins to hold weapons and such. If Salmonids did have Inkling equivalents, then the Splatoon ecosystem would be out of balance since the most plentiful species having the most superiority on survival is bad on the ecosystem in general.

This is interesting. Interestingly enough, the fact that Inklings can carry such things as Killer Wails, Dynamo Rollers, Hydra Splatlings, etc, while being even 14 (Not at the end of puberty (where you become stronger) at least in human terms), shows that Inklings are ALREADY stronger than Humans. And I highly doubt that Salmonids would have the need for an Inkling/Octoling variety, as you said, Salmonidkind is a nomadic species. Plus, these "Inklings") (Salmonings?) would have to retreat back into the water, something that just turns them into a humanoid thing, not an Inkling/Octoling.

I have a feeling the Salmonids will play a big roll in Splat3 if Chaos wins the fest.
