Side order’s music is really good. The theming is perfect, building up as floor number increases, and much more intense than the rest of the music in the game. I love it. EXCEPT FOR ONE SONG. Echo Onslaught, the theme for Parallel Canon. This song is loved by a lot of people, but is actually PLAGIARIZED from a song called Mimicloq by the artist NANORAY.

If you want to hear for yourself, bring up both songs on separate tabs. Or just watch this video on it:
The beginnings are already similar. And then in both songs, at 12 seconds in Echo Onslaught and 26 seconds in Mimicloq, a voice sample chimes in. But the main thing is the melody at 51 seconds in Mimicloq is practically copied at 48 seconds in Echo Onslaught. And this really doesn’t seem like a coincidence, take a listen for yourself.

While it totally could be coincidence, I really don’t believe so. And now every time I listen to the song I just feel frustrated at Nintendo for it. I can never listen to the song anymore. Sorry to anyone who can’t enjoy the song anymore, but I guess just listen to Mimicloq instead, it’s really good as well!

i think it's worth bringing in nanoray's response to the situation. they said on reddit:

Hi there! I NEVER EVER use Reddit, but I figured poking my head in here may help give clarity to this very weird situation I've seemed to fall into. The Side Order DLC for this game recently came out, and a fan of mine reached out about a song that plays that's EERILY SIMILAR to a song i wrote 2 years back for one of my albums.
Short rundown on who i am; Hi, I'm Nanoray! Ive been making a lot of very weird and fun music for years; but im not going to use this post to try and advertise, but i did want to weigh your opinion on a track to see if this was divine inspiration? Pure coincidence? ...something else? Oh, and to preface, I'm not trying to seek any legal action against Nintendo; if anything, I would love to connect with the artist/s behind the music and possibly talk shop, could be fun (:
and on twitter:

I appreciate everyone trying to get me gassed up to take on Goliath. Some key points to consider: 1: suing sucks and is unfunny. Financial incentive is the only net positive from this outcome IF I won 2: possible blacklisting from working with studio names in the industry
The ultimate takeaway for me seeing all of the responses in regards to the splatoon thing is that, if anything! It’s got me hyped to want to work more on music, a feeling that has been pretty destitute for me as of late. Also don’t harass anyone

the thing about this is that it's near impossible to like... prove whether the track was intentionally plagiarized, accidentally plagiarized, or purely coincidentally similar, and even nanoray themself isn't really seeking the answer to that question (whether out of genuinely not caring or not caring enough for suing nintendo to outweigh the negatives of... suing nintendo). so like, feel how you want about the song, but any sort of resolution to the question of "is this specific part of this song plagiarized" is dead in the water.

do check out nanoray's music if you haven't, though. it's on bandcamp :) actually, the whole echo onslaught situation introduced me and several other splat fans to them, so i guess that's a positive?

no need to come in swinging? we're talking about a melody that's similar enough that several fans and the artist of the older track noticed it. i don't even think it's a clear-cut case of plagiarism but there's no reason to be condescending about it

this is making my head hurt. you’re wrong. just because a song sounds eerily similar to another does not mean that it’s plagiarized. why would you think this

this is basically my opinion on the situation as a musician. anybody who's saying "oh it's just the progression!!" is wrong, it's literally the same melody, but.. sometimes as an artist you just sit down to make something and then you don't realize your brain was subconsciously thinking about another piece until you're already finished. i suppose the question to ask now is whether or not the changes the composer of echo made to the mix, instrumental, etc. is enough to make it a different song, but that is just. a whole realm of subjectivity

i will say though, the fact that nintendo didn't catch this during their quality testing is. kind of insane

TBH this just seems like a "cat concerto vs rhapsody rabbit" situation where two creators both make something incredibly similar due to already invoking a similar style. It's nowhere near as egregious as something like Kenji Yamamoto, who had been proven to constantly plagiarize a wide variety of songs and repurposed them into Dragon Ball.
