Kills matter in an odd way. Splatoon is set up in a way were there are 3 or 4 choke points to keep an enemy at bay from. However it can be difficult to push an enemy back to said point. The best way is to kill them. This makes the enemy have to respawn and gives them 2 options. To squid there...

The congregating in the middle is the best part. Makes everyone force into combat and whoever wins will be granted with progression. But the opposing team can stop said progression.
