I ended up at #5 for Team Snowman. I didn't expect to place that well; I just wanted to be in the top 100. Had I known how close I was to #1, I might have played for a few more hours.
I timed it at 152 frames (about 2.5 seconds), from the time I die to the time the camera moves to the platform. From there, it takes another 119 frames to gain control, regardless of how many Quick Respawns you have. It takes 393 frames to get to the platform with no Quick Respawns, so you save...
I tried this out and can confirm that it works. If you save without talking to Spyke, the gear he's selling can have different abilities the next day. But what happens if you don't play at all, though? Will the gear be the same? That might be useful if Spyke offers two abilities, but you don't...
I just got a pure Backwards Cap:
I was very lucky with this; I ordered a semi-pure from a player I saw in a random game, then I got the first two abilities from Spyke on my first try.
