I'm convinced most American voters don't even know what a tariff is why are yall acting so surprised didn't you guys vote for him knowing this would happen?? It was one of his main policies
I feel like Americans have super strong political opinions but know absolutely nothing policy-wise these days
Uh we aren't the only country with a tariff. A lot of countries do.
I have a lot of ex-pat friends in Japan and you know what they ask for? American goods they can get there. Lucky Charms in SoCal is about $5. Over there $9. A bag of small Albanese gummy bears here about $4, over there $7. People who want a taste of home have to pay way more with a weak yen.
Canada, Taiwan, and Vietnam are now in negotiation mode to reduce or eliminate (with Canada) to 0, which itself is the end goal of these tariff discussions. Either that, or bring back manufacturing and productions back to the US from overseas so people here can do the producing rather than rely on what is practically slave labor in cheaper countries.
Although tariffs can often be useful, starting a global trade war is not. The only people who might "win" a trade war are mega-rich American companies and oligarchs, because they can now get away with producing low-quality products and make more money.
For example, when Trump says "why does nobody buy American cars?!?!" and proceeds to slam imported cars with tariffs, it's not because European cars are made using "slave labour" and have an unfair advantage (Tesla factories are way more exploitative of their workers).
It's because European cars from countries such as Germany and the UK are just better. But now American car companies can get away with producing lower-quality cars, and the American consumers lose out.
