I was thinking about the mashing requirement for brushes and Squeezer and how it sucks that there's a physical barrier for a lot of people to the weapon, when I had an idea to start a thread talking about the accessibility issues this game has and how to possibly fix them. I had this idea for brushes and Squeezer:

Brush running/Squeezer painting mode: hold ZR like normal
Brush flick/Squeezer semiauto: tap ZR once, then hold down ZR

What do you guys think of this solution? Do you have other ideas to improve Splatoon's accessibility?

This also extends to rollers, buckets, & splatanas for some people, as the repetitive hand motions can cause issue for people with certain disabilities. Having the thumbstick click needed to use special as well, people with very weak hands can have issues with that, as the activation force for that input tends to be a bit higher than on other inputs.

There are controllers that can perform rapid-fire presses by pressing down a button. I think the more useful option would be designating a button for that. Unfortunately this requires a controller that can already do this or for Nintendo to have that option available, since as far as I know there isn't anything like that for Nintendo controllers. Would like to be wrong however, especially as someone who has muscle problems (and can't play the game as often as a result).

this tap into hold adds issues with going from flicking to rolling on brushes, and with going from tap shots to paint mode on squeezer. id hope for a more elegant solution.

How so? The way I was thinking it would work is once you release the hold it would default back to the first mode.

It's definitely a good way to assist with the current system, but I consider turbo controllers more of a crutch since you have to buy one separately instead of the solution being built into the game.

I think the next official nintendo controller needs back paddles. I’m very close with someone with a muscle disorder, and they use back paddles pmuch everywhere they can, so you could map the mash fire to one of the paddles.

Probably not a popular take but weapons like blob and dynamo are the developers adding accessible weapons that have lower motor requirements. The developers should be allowed to add weapons that not everyone can use

You also have to identify the threshold of accessibility that you want to facilitate for. Should all weapons be accessible to all players? What about people who just never picked up the game because even what exists isn’t really catered to their specific disabilities? The extreme example of course being that the greatly audiovisually impaired are locked out of almost every type of video game, should we no longer produce video games in response?

It’s a much more difficult conversation than just “we should make things more accessible.” We should, absolutely! But that also requires identifying where you’re going to draw the line, which people you’re going to not design for, even if it feels icky. Not everything is made for everyone, but everyone should have something.

I agree with Joy's point. Not everything can be tailor-made for everyone, unfortunately. Even if I may not be able to play the game as much, I go within my means to play it- and it's really better for me that I play it less, than force myself to play and actively cause harm to myself. I think the solutions we will find for accessibility will have to come from outside (such as the specific controllers mentioned) until there is enough demand for Nintendo to consider offering options for those with disabilities/ ailments. Before I was met with this problem I have, I could play the game perfectly fine, which I think is the vast majority that Nintendo has in consideration.

let's say i wanted to flick twice on inkbrush, then go right into roll mode. explain how id do so.
1) Tap ZR, then hold down ZR to activate flicking
2) Flick until you want to stop
3) Let go of ZR, hold down ZR to activate roll mode

Granted, it might be difficult to do a specific amount of flicks/shots with this, but they take a small enough amount of time that I don't think it would be an issue

You can map the "right stick press" to a different button in the switch's menu. You can also map multiple buttons to count as the ZR button, and then alternate between them to mash. Buying a turbo controller would be better, but it's cool that there are a few options.

As someone who physically can’t use those weapons bc my arms will stiffen up and hurt just with a few seconds of spamming, this ngl seems like a great idea. My controller has an auto clicker on it and it’s quite tricky for me to be able to activate it mid battle so I’m really never able to use it (besides skipping the news on Splat 2). So if nintendo were to change the function for brushes and squeezers to be like as you said then I would probably start using both weapons and wouldn’t have to avoid it.

Maybe this could also be applied to sloshers and rollers (like tri and carbon) since weapons like those tend to hurt my hands also !
