Well, they're definitely simpler than Turf War, but that's because they're not as open-ended. Which isn't a bad thing, the Ranked modes add variety, which can be good when I get bored of one or the other, and they're all fun (except when someone disconnects, or there's a lot of lag, but that's an inevitable problem in online games, right?), which is very good, at least I think so.
Competitive Splatoon would definitely be different depending on the mode played; Turf Wars strategy (INK ALL THE THINGS, which is fairly open-ended as to how you do that; I feel it favors ink-spreading weapons like Aerosprays and Rollers and Brushes, but I could be wrong) is different from Splat Zones strategy (GET THIS/THESE POINTS AND HOLD, which is pretty straightforward and kind of like Turf War in some respects, though weapons that are good at splatting foes, such as Chargers and Blasters, are probably more viable here than Turf War, and Rollers and Brushes, which can ink areas pretty quickly, are still great to have around) is different from Tower Control strategy (RIDE THE TOWER TO THE KNOCKOUT AREA, which is also fairly straightforward and pretty combat-intensive, requiring more combat-capable weapons, though turf-covering weapons are also useful for clearing out enemy ink on their side of the map, or yours if they push into it), which will probably also be different from Rainmaker strategy (CAPTURE THE FLAG, or something like it; it's not out yet, so I don't know for sure, but it should probably require a balanced team makeup to turf areas and deal with combat, as well as the ability to do those with only 3 teammates while one holds the Rainmaker (though that guy can attack with it apparently, so maybe turf-covering is more important for the 3-man team; again, pure conjecture, here), regardless of which teammate is holding it) when that comes out.
If competitive Splatoon happens (is it a thing yet? I only ask because I don't know, seems like it would but I'm not sure), I'd hope it allows all modes to be played in some fashion (perhaps a mode-select-before-the-match-starts type of thing; could that work?), like you said in your video (I think it was that one, might have been the Inkbrush video).
At least, that's what I think.
