Damage and Defense up: main or sub?

I'm looking to build a set with several damage and defense ups. Mainly, I'm interested in defense ups. I read somewhere that one main of defense increase your defense by 5% and one sub by 3%. However, somewhere else I read that one main is 6% and one sub is 2%. Who's right?

I'm looking for accurate percentages for damage up as well. If possible, I'd like to learn about diminishing returns for these abilities as well.
