How do gear abbilities stack?

I´ve read everything: abilities don´t stack, they stack with diminishing returns, they only stack on different clothes...so which one is right? Examples:

If I get a hat with Defense+ as main and 3 Speed+, do the Speed+ stack? I know this is highly unlikely, but I have a hat like this. How much do every instance of Speed+ add towards the total boost?

If I have 2 clothe pieces with the same subs, are diminishing returns also applied in this case?

Basically, I want to know if there´s a guide somewhere explaining how all the system works because I´m finding lots of contradictory information online.

Most abilities do stack (Damage, Speed, Ink Saver, Defense, etc.). The only ones that do not stack are the activatables (Stealth Swim, Bomb Sniffer, Etc.)

There is also diminishing returns. However I don't think it has been laid out for every ability yet.

Wow that´s a bunch of information, thanks!

I´ve read those guides, but there´s no information on how the stacking works regarding the skills being in the same piece of cloth of spread over different pieces. I´ll see if I have the apropiate gear to make some tests myself and post here the results.
