How popular would a GamePad mode be?

It uses two Nintendo Switch consoles, one docked with Splatoon 2 or 3 and the other used in handheld mode with a free app. The handheld mode Switch acts like the Wii U GamePad did in Splatoon 1.

Even if we're assuming Switch Lites would be able to be used for this, that's still a pretty expensive proposition for most people. Bare minimum it would be $500 - that's a lot to drop on a feature that was a failure to begin with. Even if we assume some of the games that are currently out get updated to support this, is there much benefit? Splatoon 2/3 would get the GamePad map and touch screen super jumping, but I don't think that's enough to make the feature worthwhile for most people.

I wouldn't mind if there was something like a companion app for smartphones that could display your map/inventory for some games, but Sony and Microsoft have both tried that in the past to little success. I don't suspect this feature would be any more popular, unfortunately.
