How to order gear from Others

Hi,
I've been looking around the forums and see a lot of people mentioning that they can order gear from others on the website. I wanted to ask how this works; I thought you could only order gear from random Inklings who are in the plaza, not specific people you know. Can someone explain this to me?

The inklings in the plaza are usually inklings that you've played with, so they play a couple matches together to get them to show in their plaza.
