Let's not judge K/D.

So, basically, after browsing some of these forums, I've come across a lot of people on this site are using kill to death ratios to show how good they are. I get it, as there really isn't a true ranking to judge by, but this game is not only based on kills. Yeah, they help a lot, but they're not the main basis of this game.

I guess I might be a little biased on this issue, since I usually go all out in Splat Zones and get splatted a lot, but that's okay, because I've capped a lot of zones in the process. Sometimes, you need risk takers on your team.

In short, having a great k/d ratio is good for you, but how are you helping the primary objective?

To substitute this, I have no ideas, and I believe there is no good way to judge individuals through this game. Once teams come out in august, we will be able to judge by records. (side note to the Squidboards staff-maybe we should have a record input system on a team page? Just a thought.)

Thanks for reading this. Don't know if my points made sense, but feel free to disagree. I'm open to suggestion.

The only time I show off my KD is in turf wars when it's casual. I don't see the point in bragging about KD in splat. It's not good to die since putting your team at a big disadvantage can cause to you losing mid entirely and wiping but some people seem to brag about getting pointless offsite kill games and not even contributing to the zone itself.

I understand it's not good to die, but it's not like you can't come back from it, and I don't think it's that huge of a problem. I don't know, that's just my opinion.

Of course you can comeback but if someone dies and they get complete map control and end up wiping you that gives them 10-15 seconds to paint mid and surrounding areas and set up sprinklers and other things which can be deadly

What I want to see is an example of an entire team going negative and still winning. Only then will I really accept that k/d is anywhere near completely useless.

There had got to be an example somewhere.

When you are playing any game mode with an objective, K/D is definitely not that important in determining one's full contribution in a match. There are too many factors to consider in an objective setting. K/D only becomes truly relevant in Deathmatch game modes.

The thing is that when you kill someone, they aren't doing a thing while they respawn. Respawn time isn't long, but you can get so much done in 5 seconds in this game. Sure, you can do really well running away from every fight to ink elsewhere (especially in turf wars where kills are far less significant than in splat zones where a quick team wipe can result in a zone capture and defensive set up for the other team), but if you are going 0-10 you probably didn't get that much of your ink on the ground.

The most important thing you can do in this game in most scenarios is to do something with a low risk of dying, because staying alive is the most important thing in this game almost all the time. As a direct result of that, killing people is important, with the opportunity cost they take for dying combined with any other losses as a result are a much larger loss that what you usually pay to go for a kill. This also means going for a kill and then dying is even worse than dying when you were doing something else, because you pay an opportunity cost for choosing to go for the kill and getting nothing from it, and then for dying to the opponent's counter proposal that is usually less of a commitment than your going for a kill.
