Rank Point System?

This is an honest question about the point/rank system. How does the game determine how many points you lose?

Once I played two matches in a row, same people, both knockout losses. The first time I lost one point, the second time I lost twelve. Sometimes I'll lose 2, or 10, or 8, and it doesn't make much sense to me.

Anyone have any ideas?

You lose less points if higher ranked people beat you, and lose more if lower ranks beat you.

Still makes more sense than the sequel's system.
