It only needs to be big enough to hold the game and/or all save data. My game (I downloaded) is around 2.5 gigs. If you have the physical version it will be less for you. To answer your question, four gigabytes should be plenty.

I guess here is as good a place to ask, since I'm kinda in the same boat as SupahN0va.

So I have a USB drive, I formatted it and copied my game file to it, and when I booted up the game it told me there was a problem with it. When I reset the system, it acted like the drive hadn't been formatted yet. So I reformatted it, recopied the stuff onto it, and then it decided to work. Rerolls didn't go as planned, so I repeated everything again, and when I booted it up it gave me the error message again. This time, though, the drive registered as having been formatted.

Now is there something I did wrong, or is there an issue with the drive itself? And should I be concerned that my save file might get screwed up if I copy the drive's data back onto the system?

Not the way I do it, you could lose your snails but that's the worst thing that comes to mind. How do you lose your files?
Well, yeah you lose your snails, but there have been multiple times where i've copied the data over, something happens with the usb connection, and the data gets corrupted. I'm just saying that it could be possible.

LupusFreak is correct that your data can be corrupted. The Wii U is incompatible with USBs so there is a small chance that it can corrupt the save data. However, this doesn't seem very common. I've never had it happen and neither have any of my friends. It is a small chance but one to be aware of nonetheless. :)

That's interesting. I have some questions. Is it an old drive? Are the contacts clean and without any buildup? I'm not sure if this would cause problems, but is it usb 2.0 or 3.0? I know 3.0 is backwards compatible but the Wii U only has 2.0. It sounds like you're doing it right, but I wouldn't copy it back if you're having lots of problems.

As long as you're using hardware that's in good condition, there shouldn't be much if any risk of losing data. Save scumming isn't at all complicated either. Just make sure everything's in order, follow the steps needed, and enjoy your infinite Spyke monies.

@97Stephen

It should be a new drive. I bought it from a Staples last month. I checked the packaging it came in, and it says it is (and I quote) "Interface: USB 2.0 (also compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 1.1 ports)." It's a Verbatim brand disk drive if that makes a difference.

That's really odd. The only thing I can think of is to try a different drive if you have one. You could also try to put something from a computer on the drive to see if the drive is the problem.

Well. This is interesting. I tried it again yesterday, and I had no problems with the data.

So today, I went to check all my data again (on the off chance that I re-deleted my USB drive file copy), and I got an Error Code 150-3032, which Nintendo Support doesn't recognize. I panicked for a bit, but I stopped getting the error code after taking the drive out of my Wii U.
Testing it on my laptop, it wasn't recognized initially (I think I saw the word malfunctioned somewhere in the dialogue box that popped up). Subsequent times, though, it acts fine.

I think this particular drive might be ****ed. I'll have to check the other two to see if they act similarly.

Yeah Flareth, that sounds juuuuuuuust inconsistent enough to be a hardware problem. Test the others to be sure, but you may want to replace that drive.
