So I want to have an in-person Splatoon tournament in the future, but...

Heya, squids. I run a video game club down here at Mississippi State University and I love Splatoon and we have about 20 people that I know of that play Splatoon as well, so I'm sure we could pull one off in the coming fall semester, especially if we get the word out about a month in advance; we already draw crowds from Alabama and our other neighbors. We've been focusing on fighting and PC games this past semester and there has been some demand for shooters, so I'm aiming to have a Splatoon tournament in close proximity to Call of Duty, Halo, etc. There might be some conflict of atmosphere here, but we want to cater to casuals as well as hardcore gamers (which is why we're including CoD... jk.)

However, I'm concerned that the lack of LAN support would basically bar us from our best location for events, which is our student union's ballroom. Ethernet isn't readily available there and the student union's Wi-Fi is terrible considering how many people are on it at any given time. So is there any way we can brute force some kind of LAN setup, even if it means restricting players to an arbitrary gear setup (think the global testfire gear/weapons) by having a few modded Wii-Us? We could have it in our computer science building which naturally has excellent Wi-Fi/Ethernet, but it's out of the way and wouldn't attract as much attention, not to mention parking issues.

So yeah, I want to have a Splatoon tournament, but Nintendo isn't makin' this easy for me without LAN. Any ideas?

This has been discussed before. This post explains that as long as everything is connected to the same router, you should have a connection almost equal to LAN. Of course, Ethernet adapters are strongly encouraged in this case.

Now, the other thing that you may not have noticed is, if you want people to play with their own gear, they must bring their consoles to the tournament. There's apparently no way around this.

OK, so I didn't read this part before. But there's no problem, because actual Internet is only used to create the matches.
