Take what I say with a grain of salt, I'm kind of a scrub at this game.

-If you don't have motion controls, turn them on. You could probably beat the boss without it but I find it helps more to have it on.
-Ink as much of the platform as you can so that you can get some room to move around.
-You will notice that DJ Octavio moves back after you damage him enough, you could push forward but you might find yourself really close to him so you could also stay back a bit. If you go up to where he is and you can see his force field, then you may want to fall back. Keep damaging him and he should move further back.
-When you get a special, save it for when you need it.

That's all I can think of, hope this helps!

First of all, I had my tank fully upgraded, and my shooter was one shy of max rate of fire. I am not sure if those were critical, but they helped.

Second, I would strongly encourage you to keep trying and practicing. Don't get discouraged and try to stay positive, because it's a very frustrating fight. Maybe I suxxors, but it took me a good 25+ times to finally get to the point of beating this guy. Almost every match I did a little better until finally elements of the fight became routine.

If you could describe where you're having trouble, I could offer some advice on certain key changes I made that helped a lot.

I had problems at shooting everything.

Depending on what stage you're at, try to learn his patterns in order to anticipate what is coming. I actually started calling out loud what was coming (e.g., "two bombs, another two bombs, now fist and fist"). Try to shoot the bombs in the air, but I learned that it isn't critical to prevent them from falling. They will usually just stun you and create a mess to clean up, but not much more. If you're at the stage where he shoots out the red balls with spawns, those would be your number one priority to shoot prior to them landing.

Also, initially I tried to paint everything. Later, I didn't worry about it as much and just painted enough to move around in to avoid the attacks.
