My alt got to S at level 26. I would attribute a-lot of it to very lucky matchmaking though as i did it all solo and i wasn't really trying to go to S straight away. I just got a lucky string of good players on my team and terrible people on the other.

I don't think there is a more "competitively viable" option. Some people will be much more comfortable with one control option or another. Its just like fighting games; some people prefer different button setups/fight-sticks/controllers. There is no one way that is "better" for competitive play...
