You can't look at this and seriously tell me it doesn't have water in it.
Not unless you think chemistry in general is just entirely different in Splatoon. And considering it's supposed to be post-apocalyptic Earth, that doesn't make any sense.
It’s safe to say NA dialogue shouldn’t be taken as canon (e.g. the Marina’s landlord issue) but it’s still funny to imagine pure water being poisonous to inklings and octolings.
Weird idea: water is poisonous and drinking is unnecessary, and the drinks are 100% ethanol. which also explains why they look so small.
So basically to influence which abilities go on your gear, you get high. Seems like lore Splatoon would have.

According to this website, corn syrup still contains water. Which might still be deadly.
The bigger flaw with this is that corn syrup would be rather difficult to suck out of a straw like that because of how sticky it is.
