Isn't this the same thing that happened to movies a while ago? The most infamous example being the sonic movie? I think people expressed their dislike of that pretty clearly, and I have trouble seeing it being different in the context of video games.
@youre_a_squib_now kinda? im really not much of a movie person so i can't speak confidently on them. my issue is that there's so many games that just... look exactly the same to me. all these trailers are blurring together! not to mention the uncanny valley factor. and clearly this is what's selling if so many different studios are doing it...
and on the movie trailer point, it's like. i'm a story enjoyer. i play games for their stories and fill in the blanks if there's not enough of a story. but i really am not a fan of trailers just doing the movie trailer thing. i want to see the gameplay of the video game you are trying to get me interested in playing?
the sonic movie was in the position of being an adaptation of a game franchise that had an art style the fans knew well. to go weird and uncanny valley with that was doomed to get backlash. but new game properties can get away with the 'cutting-edge' hyperrealism because they don't have those same shoes to fill. but i don't like it. maybe i'm old-fashioned
