12 Ability slots to fill: Min-Maxing and Theory Crafting

In the recent Nintendo Direct, we learned that gear will work like this:

One main slot per gear
-This ability slot is locked. Whatever ability this piece comes with cannot be re-rolled

Maximum of 3 slots per gear (more slots are purchased with super snails)
-These 3 slots can be re-rolled. It will cost 1 super snail to re-roll abilities.
It was not stated if you can re-roll individual abilities, if they stack, or if you can get duplicate abilities on a piece of gear

In the above link is all known abilities in Splatoon. Some of them are not yet known (Haunt, Comeback, etc).

This thread is for discussion of necessary gear abilities as well as specific weapon gear combinations.

Necessary gear abilities (opinion):
Ink Saver (Main)
Ink Saver (Sub)
Ink Recovery Up (this was default in the demo)
Quick Respawn (this was default in the demo)
Special Saver (this was default in the demo)
Bomb Range Up
Run Speed Up
Swim Speed Up
Quick Super Jump

Above is what I think will be necessary for competitive gear. There's also other great abilities such as Steath Jump/Stealth Swim, Defense Up, Ink Defense Up, Damage Up, etc.

Are you sure the super snails are for both increasing slots AND re-rolling abilities? Because I thought that was just for increasing the number of slots and you could re-roll abilities for free.

The language isn't completely clear but my understanding is it's a super sea snail to increase the slots and a sea snail to reroll. Hopefully you're correct.

Hopefully. Would be kinda lame, if those costed super snails since there is always the possibility of getting a bad roll. Would be an incredibly waste considering how you are suppose to get them as well.

I was under the impression that rerolls would cost super sea snails also but I rewatched the video and it's not clear really. My feeling still is that rerolling needs some cost. Maybe a super sea snail, coin cost, or some time cooldown. If it were completely free then it trivializes the process of getting the gear that you want, which is not what they want I don't think.

Shown to be possible, at least with the case of one being the main ability and the other as a randomly-assigned ability:



I believe we still have no confirmation whether or not you can get the same ability twice / 3 times among the randomly-assigned abilities.

Bomb Range Up is extremely situational. I think Haunt is a very good ability, Ink Recovery Up is also vital.

Are there any normal sea snails? I didn't know about this.
Also, I can tell getting perfect gear is going to be a grind-fest. Oh well.. you gotta try the best to be the best. :confused:

It's going to be important to get the abilities suited to your role/playstyle. With my team as a sniper specialist I want to focus. Ink saver and both main and sub weapon are VITAL lol. ink resistance and speed increase and ink recovery are savage. Haunt and stealth jump seem pretty suitable for a sniper game. Still all in question though
