Back in November we were given details about the new updates that had come to the game, some still waiting to be delivered. One of the pieces of info that was shown and discussed was actually the return of an old map from Splatoon 1, being Arowana Mall.

On November 22nd the Japanese splatoon account tweeted out pictures of the returning map here:

Since older maps have been getting the treatment of new stage mechanics or additions I thought it would be fun to see exactly what some of the new changes could say for this re-introduction.

As shown in the image below we have a great view of the side paths and the middle section of the map. One thing that caught my eye almost instantly was the left most path, it's completely new and actually breaks off from the original left balcony area meaning there is now a potential 3rd access point to mid. Speaking of mid, the original railing that used to be on the right side of the main ramp is now gone and that section is completely flattened. To make things even more interesting, the platform has extended even more towards the green grated pathway to the right of mid, mostly somewhere you would see sniper very often. That specific middle section extends so far that it would actually allow you to jump off into mid safely, that is of course is nobody is there, and actually extends through 1/3 of the main ramp. This could possibly indicate that the main ramp is now slightly less wider than it used to be, but this could also men that there is a better way to flank up the wall on the right side now as an option considering there used to be a large death zone of water there.

This next image shown from the tweet shows off the end section of the left most path mentioned from the first image as well as a new addition to the main ramp. This smaller ramp seems to be a different take on the original black boxed ramp that was added in splatoon 1 for some of the ranked modes (SZ and RM I believe?) and there also seems to be an indication of a small path after it meaning you'll be able to climb right up that wide brick wall. speaking of which, that specific brick wall used to be much thinner and harder to climb up in splatoon one, it's even extended farther out as well if we're using the comparison picture above. Now there is one detail that connects the two twitter pictures and that is the new left side pathway that extends and ends at the middle green platform, so there seems to be a new option for long ranged weapons who want a safer area to perch themselves on instead of using the left catwalk as the only option.

Overall it seems like Arowana is getting nice quality of life changes that could lead to better outcomes than what splatoon 1 had to offer. Now, this isnt to say "gone are the days of having to fight on the main ramp to mid choke" but it does seem like they are given us more options to approach mid in general. this means that there will likely be more options for flanking or sharking weapons to thrive given how easy it seems to be able to reach the other teams long alleyway from the left side as well as the safer wall climb on the right side of the main ramp to mid.

The new changes seem to be pretty nice, especially seeing as now it wont be such a pain to fight in two different tight choke areas, which were a real issue with the original map (personally). But overall I'd say it'll do fine.

and hey... maybe it'll revive chargers

Arowana Mall is set to come out early February, while Shellendorf Institute is to come out this month in January. Hopefully this Friday for splatfest.
