Can you save the shells?

I am not level 20, but I am a dog Defender. I was wondering if the shells would be stored if your not level 20. Jinks on you ;)

Pretty sure the option for the slots shows up if you have Super Sea Snails even if you aren't level 20

Still, when i talk to spike it doesn't let me.

I'm not actually sure, i haven't unlocked the slots yet even though i'm level 17.
