Don't suppose this has happened to anyone else? It means I've lost my weapons and ideal gear, progress in the story, titles, rank and other stuff. Lost some data for other games too, like Smash Brothers, but Splatoon is the one I invested in most. Shame really, but I have no idea how it happened. :(

While it doesn't help your situation, I'm curious if there is a way to back up your WiiU's game data now...

Nope, not really :\ just make a backup on an external drive and hope you don't lose it. If you get a different Wii U you're screwed too since each system has their own storage encryption keys, so it isn't transferable.
