Do you guys think rotations are a good thing?

I can't think of any other multiplayer game where you have to wait for your favourite map/mode to be in a rotation.
I feel like it would be better to have a matchmaking system where you just pick the maps and modes you wanna play, instead of having to wait for them to come up in the rotation.
Wouldn't you guys agree?
Only downside I could see here is less popular maps being no longer played in solo Q, cause everyone wants to play the good maps lol

i feel like i can understand the rotation system in this game. i haven't played a lot of similar games so i can't really compare it to anything, but i feel like being able to pick what you want to play would far overcomplicate the matchmaking process and make the game feel less accessible to new players. atm the game is very well designed to prevent choice overload. it would also probably increase matchmaking time.

i could see it making sense for higher rank matchmaking or X battles though. but from what i understand, X battles already has matchmaking problems

I still like the rotation system, for a game that promotes diversity of gameplay (through the use of many weapon kits and gear abilities) it would be quite silly to being asked to adapt to a map/mode. In addition, it'd be easily abusable, just pick the map mode you're the strongest at and you climb the ranks super easily. That system would also mess up the matchmaking even more than usual, not only would you have players separated based on queue and rank but you'd ALSO have to separate players based on which maps they choose.

Saw people propose a system like mario kart 8's, where a set of maps is presented to everyone in the room and the one played is determined through a vote. I think it's better than letting players pick specific maps but I still find the rotation system enjoyable.

i'm personally alright with the rotation system. i feel like if people just chose what they wanted to play on all the time, nobody would learn how to strategize well on anything outside of that map. plus the possible matchmaking issues other ppl in this thread have mentioned

It's good, the only thing about it is that it repeats a lot of stages like hammer Head, Humbback, Haggle fish, and Surgeon whenever I'm getting on Splatoon

I wouldn't mind the rotation system if there weren't so many bad maps in the game. It also doesn't help that you can end up playing the same map 5 matches in a row. Personally, I would have just wanted them to add 3 maps to rotations instead of keeping it at 2.

I feel like the rotation system is good, actually. Otherwise things would get stale with people always playing the same maps. I've had this happen in other games. As much as I like Makomart, I'd rather not have to play it every single time I play a zones match. Being forced to play maps and modes I'm not comfortable with at times is fun honestly.

Personally I like the system as it is, for most of the reasons mentioned. And like others have said, matchmaking is the primary technical reason picking your own map/mode unfortunately isn't very practical. The more the matchmaking buckets there are, the less people are in them, and the harder it is going to be to form teams that are in any way balanced from those smaller groups, etc.,

The solution, therefore, is to get everyone in the world playing this game, so that there will be so many people playing at any given time that matchmaking is fantastic no matter how many ways we split it! Let's get on that!

Joking aside this got me wondering: has the community at any point devised a set of standard pool names for certain map/mode combinations? Like if you joined the pool "Mahizones" you would find a bunch of private battle rooms up for people wanting to play splat zones on mahi. Far from an ideal solution but just wondered if it had been considered/done.

OOooo, something i have thought about a fair bit
i have very mixed feelings, but simply :
On one hand, if all the maps are good, it allows players to have an idea of what map they will be thrown into and some people will like that a lot !
On the other hand, if the rotation involves [map you hate #1] and [map you hate #2]... not cool

Map rotations are one of the biggest things driving me away from Splatoon. I have obligations in life that restrict when I can and can't practice for tournaments, and finding a break in my schedule to grind some x battles only to see mincemeat and mahi tower control makes me want to quit the game. I think it's completely ridiculous to restrict players to only two map mode combos for x battles at any given time, especially when so many map mode combos are terribly unfun. The majority of the time I'm stuck gambling on a 50/50 as to whether or not I'll get to enjoy a fun and engaging game or be stuck playing a 5 minute stall fest. The rotation system doesn't even guarantee that I can practice any mode to prep for Minnow Cup or All 4 One... Completely unacceptable imo.

Maybe I've just gotten used to it by now but I really don't mind the rotation system in Splatoon 3. Since there are always two out of the four mode options available (three if you have access to X-battles), and the two hour rotations aren't too long. After three games I honestly struggle to envision another way for this game to do things.

It's fine I guess. In a perfect world, we would still be using the old custom-server based system for every game like how they do it in Counter Strike or tf2. I would love to hop into a server that's rainmaker only and just play that for a few hours without the stress of losing rank points. But I also understand that the whole "host your own server and set it up how you like" thing doesn't translate well to consoles.
