If you're looking for a squad, or want to recruit for one, check out squid locator and then chill out in squad social. After that you can bring your newly founded or joined team over to tournament listings and sign up for a tourney. When you get tired of talking splatoon jump into one of the numerous off topic areas at the bottom of the forum list and talk about whatever it is you fancy.
