I made this theory now because of a recent discovery someone made of a promo video for an update. What the video has shown is an Octoling girl with an Inkling girl hairstyle, this off course lends to the idea of an Inktoling, but there are actually a few reasons why an Inktoling simply cannot happen.
Reason #1: Design motifs and voice
I'm talking about how Inklings and Octolings have design motifs that really don't mesh well together. For instance, how Inkling design is "sharper" than that of Octoling design, like how the squid form clearly has straight edges as opposed to the octopus form which has rounded ones. Another example to the "sharp vs rounded" designs which are the ears. Inkling voices tend to be more hyper whereas Octoling voices tend to be more calm. This distinction is intended to differentiate between the two. It's really hard to try to mix both design motifs without making it look awkward, and the voices, well, recording two sets of voices for both male and female versions of Inktolings is even more challenging, because hyper and calmness never mix well.
Reason #2: Lore inconsistencies
While the Inklings and Octolings from Inkadia were separated until sometime in Splatoon 2, that would've been the reason why there weren't Inktolings, but it's different in the Splatlands where Inklings and Octolings never lived in separate societies, so if Inktolings existed, they would've already been recorded and known. Another lore inconsistency is their biology, even before evolution, squids and octopi were never able to mix, and years of evolution would've actually made their genes even more incompatible, even if they went through a convergent evolution. Genetics is a really important part of what makes compatibility work. Not only that but Octoling tentacles become separate beings when cut, something that's not true for Inkling tentacles.
Reason #3: They would've been teased
It's true, when playable Octolings were the talk of the town, the Splatoon devs teased playable Octolings for such a long time, like how they had a background full of squids on a Splatoon website, but among those squids was a single octopus. Heck, even in the first two Splatoon games when they showed DJ Octavio in his humanoid form. But what really sealed the deal is also the fact that Off the Hook had an Octoling member, long before playable Octolings were even shown. The only thing that's really teasing Inktolings right now is Inkling x Octoling couples, one shown in a banner and a few more shown in the promo trailer for Crableg Capital. Other than that, there's nothing else whatsoever teasing the existence of Inktolings, not in-game and not on official websites either.
