I was thinking about the above image yesterday and it made me realize something. One of the most common criticisms against modern shooters is the lack of colour in the artwork, everything being a dull brownish-grey. Splatoon is a game about literally painting the world. I don't think that's a coincidence. I think Splatoon is actually satire...

Fair enough, don't really play them so wouldn't know. Dreary colour palette was certainly a common criticism until fairly recently though. I just like the idea that the painting mechanic is a deliberate reference to it. It's subversive.
