Anyone here good at Squid Ball?

How does the aiming work?

I have trouble getting past level 10. >.> (The three spikey urchins in a column blocking you from being successful.)

You can hold left and right as you hit the ball to adjust your aim. Left is a more vertical shot and right is a more horizontal shot. I played this for far too long before I realized that was a thing.

So holding up and down don't do anything?
I always thought it made it more bouncey. >_>
