Its interesting to me how much I hated on the stingray but now like it. I have found it quite useful in ranked. It is not useful at all in turf war though. As a charger main, I tend to stay back from mid. If the other team makes a push in tower control, the stingray either clears the tower or splats them. More often I end up splatting them. In rainmaker, it can zone out the other team while your teammates pop the rainmaker (and help pop the rainmaker too). Being able to swim with the stingray and adjust your aim is crazy useful too. Thermal ink helps with squids hiding.

I won't sit here and say the stingray is perfect though. If your in the middle of the battlefield and activate this, your guaranteed to get splatted. Its more useful when you space out your opponents first.

So far my best charger game was 25 kills in tower control. 8 of them were from the stingray.

Wow GG dude. I wish I had that level of skill XD. I usually play turf wars so I think that was probably my issue with it, I could definitely see it being useful in tower control and rainmaker, picking off key players from a distance. I just wish it was easier to splat someone because it takes so many hits to actually splat and aiming it isn't the easiest thing in the world.

There is a pretty decent learning curve to aiming it in my opinion. Trust me I stunk at it for awhile. You get a feel for it though. But ya, if you are using it in turf war, I would agree it isn't very good. As for the number of hits it takes to splat, I don't particularly worry about getting the kill. It will at least get the opposing team to move away which might just be enough of a distraction for a teammate to pick them off. Not to mention 2 or 3 shot weapons that are on my team will be able to potentially splat someone in 1 or 2 hits if I weaken them.

Try playing it in ranked sometime. You might just find it interesting! ;)

I think too many people are underestimating this special. It goes through walls and can hit across the entire freaking map. Even if it doesn't kill on its own, combine it with some chip damage from Tenta Missiles or even another Sting Ray and you're pretty much Salmonid Bosses.

Plus, it's pretty much another Echolocator with its see people ability.

After playing sting ray more it's definitely best as an area denial special, not a killing special. Use it to clear the tower, scatter the rainmaker escorts, cut off an entry point during a respawn, or force a sniper/heavy splatling off their perch. You can also cut off a means of escape while your team pressures from the other side in any ranked mode, making them more predictable.

It feels like the only reason people get out of the way of the Sting Ray is not because they fear it, but because they don't want the embarrassment of getting splatted by it. It's like being run over by an inkbrush (Something I've only ever managed to do only twice in Splat 1. So ridiculous. So glorious.).

The whole -10hp per hit and resetting damage counter is really starting to annoy me. Granted I'm in the B ranks, but it rankles me that I can get a beautiful Sting Ray snipe on a charger/heavy splatling, drowning them in six to eight consecutive hits, they briefly escape, then when I tag them again my damage counter restarts. It's almost as annoying during matches when I can hose down the entire other team because they decided to mob rush the objective and not a single one of them gets splatted, feels like they're in any real danger, or just shrugs off any damage they took.

Every time my Sting Ray is foiled I feel like some fist shaking Saturday morning cartoon villain whose latest scheme/gimmick failed!

I know it's not a special meant for splatting foes, but when you're trying to target the long range player there's no one on your team near enough to finish them off. And when you're using it against anyone else, you hardly have teammates competent enough to follow up and pick off the targets you tagged. Best you can do is get them to move a few inches because they don't want the embarrassment of being splatted by a Sting Ray.

There honestly isn't anything that would convince me the current stingray is good, I have almost never gotten killed with it (except for Salmon run, and even then only if there are multiple of them) and the most kills I have gotten used with it is.. 2, maybe?

The point is that isn't the point, though I do wonder why they even give it in Salmon Run.

But it's not really good at anything else, either. You can just move past it and the user can't aim quickly enough to really block you from anything, and it doesn't cover a large amount of ink either.. it seems very worthless. Other specials just do it's job better.

It's sort of useful in Salmon Run. Enemies tend to swarm in straight lines and the sting ray can obliterate them, it can also take out Steelheads and Scrappers and Stingers from a distance. Of course, the problem of someone catching up to you while you have it remains.

It can also pierce through Flyfish's armor.
Not to mention, you can revive teammates across the map!

it is definitely great in salmon run, I'd call it my favourite along with splashdown (At least in salmon run) since it can take out so many salmonids and bosses quite easily, however I can totally agree with it being quite weak in turf war or any multiplayer mode. It hasn't splatted me once apart from in salmon run and every other special has either caused me trouble or actually taken me out.

I've always found it difficult to aim with. It doesn't matter if it shows all the enemies through walls for a split second because you're more likely to blow up a Steel Eel by throwing ping pong balls at it than hit your target with a Sting Ray. It would be one thing if it sort of auto-locked onto whatever target you managed to hit, and would sort of chase after them at a slow pace. Considering how slowly you rotate while firing it, this can't be considered unbalanced because the enemy getting hit would have every opportunity to get away.
