Time for an explanation on why the name Octoling is actually correct to use. Just so anyone who thinks that every one of their theories is the true canon (extremely arrogant and annoying mindset by the way) can be proven wrong in this aspect.

Now to start on the enemy Octolings, their names in some other languages give the indication that they are elite females, basically, just a small fraction of the greater Octoling population. That's actually the reason why for the name. It's very common for armies to have a different rank name for the person who's part of them such as "Sargeant" or "General" before their real name. The enemy Octolings are basically named that way in some languages so they can be told apart from the common Octolings in the army.

As you guessed it, in all languages, the playable Octolings have a gender-neutral name, some languages literately calling them "Octopus" while calling the enemy Octolings "Octamazons". The name Octoling is still the most correct in localization, they aren't just Octarians who look humanoid, they are the most advanced Octarians in general, every one of them being able to reproduce not only asexually but also sexually. Which is why in Octo Valley and Octo Canyon, there are checkpoints that allow you to respawn even though they were placed there for Octolings to use.

I also finally remembered what else I was going to say, there's no such thing as marination on natural creatures in Splatoon. The playable Octolings look the way they are because of how the octopus has one natural tube that secretes useless matter in one of its sides, not both. If you check the Octoling Amiibos (scanning them in the game), you would see that their head tentacles can still be moved independently as if they were a limb. The tentacle thickness is part of how Octolings age. "Takozones" is literately only a rank name to separate the elite female Octolings from the common Octolings (Tako) and nothing more.

Now yes, there's a gear set with Marinated in the name, but that's just simply referring to the fact that it's received from the Marina Amiibo.

Also, just remembered another thing, there's a Splatfest artwork depicting Marina without anything on her ears, which as expected, she has the same ear shape as the playable Octolings. Another image is the one depicting a battle between DJ Octavio and Cap'n Cuttlefish, DJ Octavio is shown having the same teeth as the playable Octolings. These two points further prove there's no marination that occurs with the natural species in Splatoon.
