Instead, playtesters found the Gatlings (and perhaps the Rainmaker) hard to defend against when the only form of cover is the small railing. Imagine a team of gatlings in the middle of current Urchin; nowhere to run- nowhere to hide.

So now they added more cover and options:

middle path widened
ramp and inflatable block for cover
trees for cover
raised wall with railing for cover
extended upper side paths for better flanking

Conclusion: Theyre just fixing it before it becomes a problem. Do not expect any other map changes.

I agree, I think it was pretty evident Nintendo knew Urchin Underpass was a heavily forced chokepoint map. There's no way they would simply let it go through untouched if they didn't believe it wasn't a problem (before the game was released this is). It definitely has to be relating to the new gamemodes/weapons making the map extremely unfair.

There's a meta?

anyways, yeah, Nintendo is pushing for this game to be a popular competitive game. They probably saw the problem with Urchin, hopefully they see the same with Mackerel.

yes. if you look at the beta stage designs you can tell what went on in their heads when they made the changes into the final version. many of the beta stages suffered from lack of cover.

while mackerel is definite contender for remodelling, the number one reason why Urchin's chokepoint is worse is because both entrances are right next to each other. (being the wall leading to the upper path, and the main middle path). A gatling user could just camp in the corner by the railing and kill everyone in the middle section.

Mackerel chokepoint has more exits and cover. Even with the gatling in mind, I still see it to be playable

They both need work imo

This would make a lot of sense, especially because the remodel doesn't seem like it would change much for the map currently anyway.
