Walleye Weekly #02 - New Stuff!

------------------------------------------------------------------

Introduction
Walleye Weekly is a newsletter-type of thread that is posted weekly. It will cover topics related to Splatoon. If you're up to date with all the squid news, there probably won't be anything new here for you to read about. However, if you don't search around for news, you can find out what all the hubbub is about, here. Without further ado, let's get kraken.

Splatoon Updates

Splatoon added new additions to the game on June 1st, those of which include Ranked Play, a new map, Port Mackerel, and a new weapon, the N-ZAP '85.

Ranked Play
Ranked Play was to be released when enough players reached level 10 (the minimum level to play Ranked), but the number of players who reached the level skyrocketed after only a little more than 3 days after Splatoon's initial release. Nice job, everyone!

If you first join Ranked Play, you start off with a C- rank. The highest rank is A+. To rank up, you must reach 100 points from winning games, and then you can level up to the next rank. The ranks go C-, C, C+, B-, and so on. If you win a game, you receive a certain amount of points to rank up with such as 15 points or 10 points. This goes the same for when you lose. When you win, you also get a set amount of experience points and money. Each rank will give you a different amount of points, for example, if you won a game when you were rank A, you would get 3500 points and money for winning. However, if you lose, you end up with no money or experience points, as well as losing rank points. So be careful out there, and make sure you win your games! Reach for A+!

Ranked Play includes the new gamemode, Splat Zones. Splat Zones is a King of the Hill type of gamemode, where the teams have to capture a splat zone by painting it with their own ink and defending it from the other team. Once you capture a zone, a 100 second timer will tick off. Once that 100 second timer ticks to 0, your team wins. This goes the same for the other team. If you capture a zone, your timer will tick off, but the other team's timer will stay as it was before you captured the zone. Splat Zones lasts 5 minutes, and if no team's timer has been set to 0, the time will go into overtime for a few seconds depending on the situation, or the game ends and the winner is decided by the team with the most time ticked off their timer. If your team kicks off 80 seconds while the other team gets 70 seconds, then your time will win. This means you not only have to capture the zone, but make sure you protect it from enemies and make sure they don't capture it and do the same to you. Some maps even have two splat zones, so it's twice the works! This requires even more teamwork compared to Turf Wars, and it's the place that separates the good from the amazing. Keep it up, squids!

Ranked Play currently only has one gamemode, which is Splat Zones, however, it will add more gamemodes in the future. Those being gamemodes such as Tower Control or Rainmaker, both of these gamemodes were announced in the Splatoon Direct. The direct gives a little bit of information about Tower Control, but Rainmaker stays a mystery to us. When will they teach us their secrets?

New Weapons and Map
In the same update where Splat Zones and Ranked Play was released, we received a new map and weapon. The new map was called 'Port Mackerel', and the weapon was called N-ZAP '85.

Port Mackerel is a linear map in a certain port. It has grid-like paths due to the multiple amount of containers scattered around the map, making for some interesting gameplay not found in many other maps. There are also very few elevation points, and the highest of those only being near the spawn point. It's the same old in Turf Wars, but in Splat Zones, Port Mackerel contains two splat zones. This makes for some very interesting gameplay in ranked. The two zones are quite spaced from each other, causing a change in the normal way of playing Splat Zones. These two zones force the teams to split up into two, that way they can capture the other side's zone as well as protecting the zone near their side. With it's grid-like paths, sneak attacks are inevitable, and pushes can be easily made. It's not so easy when you get an Ink Strike heading to your newly-captured zone. Because of the two zones, this makes Port Mackerel a very unique and competitive map for Splat Zones, as well as Turf Wars.

The N-ZAP '58 is a replica of the NES Zapper used in Nintendo's infamous game, Duck Hunt. It's short for 'Nintendo-Zapper 1985'. The N-ZAP is a type of shooter (or splattershot), with a high fire-rate, medium range, and low damage. You have the Splat Bomb as a sub, and Echolocater as your special. You can buy it once you reach level 5, the cost being 3500.

Range: 50/100
Damage: 30/100
Fire Rate: 70/100

Weapon Description: "Each shot is kind of weak, but the high rate of fire makes up for it. This weapon's popularity is due to not only its helpful special but also to its snazzy futuristic design."

Squidboards Updates
Squidboards has made a lot of stuff since it's sixth update on Wednesday, June 3rd. Here's an overview of the content Squidboards and it's staff has produced since said update.

Squidboards Update #6
Squidboards update #6 added its new staff members. Say hello to:
@Trieste Sp and @IsmaR as our new Super Moderators,

and @SmashCapps, @Ookami Hajime, and @AVSolo as our new Writing Team.

Good luck, everyone! I hope you produce some nice quality work out there!

SmashCapps on the Loose!
In a little less than three days, SmashCapps has written 3 articles on various types of news towards Splatoon! His first article was about the Ika Musume costume coming towards us wih an August patch, posted here. For a short summary: Ika Musume, the manga, is doing a collab work with Splatoon in the manga, as well as a costume being added for free during an August patch. SmashCapps tells out the most detail we've received, and it seems that this costume will only be for Japan (for now). However, there's some more interesting stuff he's written about.

His second article is about a potential Super Mario Sunshine amiibo crossover leak. SmashCapps states both sides of fake or truth, explaining how this might be fake because of the American Splatoon logo and the Japanese Mario logos mixing together, as well as seeing how this might be true due to previous information about how some Mario amiibos have been said to be compatible with other games. But enough of those leaks and weeaboo stuff. Let's get painting!

For the third article, SmashCapps covers a bit of news covered over Nintendo's twitter today. The ink brush has been released! The ink brush which was announced back in May was released today at 7:00PM PST. Go try it out! Shout outs to the incredible amount of content produced by SmashCapps, we're looking forward for more!

Style Update
Although new members have been putting in work, our original staff has also updated us! @Warchamp7 has informed us that Squidboards now has dark styles! Rather than just the one dark style, Octoboards, we've recieved new dark styles such as:

Dark Green
Dark Blue
Dark Orange
Dark Pink
Dark Purple
Dark Teal

I love the new dark colors, but I'm personally sticking with Octoboards. Octoling for life! What about you?

Contest #2
Squidboards is having its second contest! The first contest was a drawing contest, won by @pixelatedcody. Congrats! However, this time the contest is about Guides! The winner is whoever makes the best guide based off of three factors.
  1. Must have at least 10 ratings an average at least 4 starts
  2. Must include pictures and awesome formatting
  3. The content and insight offered must be top notch
The contest ends on June 30, and the winner receives a brand new GameCube controller! You can enter the contest by making a guide, so make sure you get started! Although a ton of guides about Maps, Weapons, and Gear, don't forget; you can make a guide for Single Player! So far, there has been no one who has posted a guide on OctoValley missions. Someone *cough* you *cough* can use this to their advantage! Even though there's been a lot of things covered from guides already made, there are tons of things people haven't made a guide about in Single Player! I, for one, don't know all the locations of all the Sunken Scrolls. I might not even know how to defeat all the bosses. I might need a guide to show me where all the hidden mission pots are! There's tons of things people haven't covered in a written guide, so go out and cover those things yourself! You might even win the contest!

Final Notes and Questions

There's been a lot of things to cover this week! Hopefully there'll be as much information to cover next week, but if not, I'll always resort to a special section on guides or the like. That's all I've got to say this week, stay classy.

Copy the questions below and answer them (if/)when you reply!
