What Are Golden Eggs For? (Theory)

I just thought of a theory going over the objective in Salmon Run: the Golden Egg. It's a mystery on what Mr. Grizz does with them, but he sure demands them. One thing that's confirmed is that it's implied that the radio plays Mr. Grizz's voice on all the right moments rather than someone behind a microphone doing that whenever the player walks inside.

There could be many possibilities, but I have narrowed them down into two, but a third unlikely one also came up in my mind:

  • Mr. Grizz eats them.
The reason why I find this unlikely is because of two reasons, first, Power Eggs are plentiful and Salmonids are willing to trade away, resulting in much less trouble, and secondly, the Salmonids themselves kind of think their destiny is to be eaten. This is further supported by what they use in battle: pans, cooking pots, spoons, and even grills are used by Salmonids. So in a sense, Mr. Grizz can just capture a few already existing Salmonids to eat.

Now that the unlikely reason is out of the way, here are the two more likely reasons on what Mr. Grizz does with the Golden Eggs:

  • Mr. Grizz is making a Salmonid farm.
  • He sells Golden Eggs himself, likely to the Octarians.
For the first reason, it could be possible that he's making a Salmonid farm himself and then releasing them into the ocean. There's one reason why he does this: profits from war. Think about it, what would be any other reason to keep releasing Salmonids himself? While some animals who are used to be in captivity can't survive in the wild, others can and the ones who do often become like wild animals again. This is seen in pythons who are released in the wild by their owners on an ecosystem that can't handle that type of snake. This would in turn, make the Salmonids released into the wild feral again, thus repeating the cycle of collecting Golden Eggs again.

The second reason could be that he sells the Golden Eggs to the Octarians. Let's be honest, the Octarians are always in a power outage crisis, this is basically the reason why most domes in Octo Valley became inhospitable. Obviously, the Salmonids are fine with trading Power Eggs for all of that machinery. But they refuse to give away Golden Eggs, we can see that all boss Salmonids except for one is using something mechanical that uses power, thus it can be assumed that the Golden Eggs have enough power to serve as a good power source. Another hint that Mr. Grizz sells Golden Eggs to the Octarians is the fact that one of the Salmon Run rewards is the Octoleet Goggles. It's very strange considering Grizzco has seemingly no correlation with the Octarians to have the said goggles as one of the rewards. Also in the files, two gear pieces were meant to be Salmon Run rewards but are unused: the Octoleet Armor and the Octoleet Boots. They together with the Octoleet Goggles are actually Splatoon 1's Octoling Armor set.

Outside the game but still in an official source: The Art of Splatoon 2 states that the fishing boats seen in the background are actually disguised Octoling boats collecting intel on Inklings.

(A little sidenote: Salmonids most likely hatch from Golden Eggs, so yeah, there's the reason from the Salmonids' point of view.)

Octolings go on Salmon Runs probably because they remember that Octarians need the Golden Eggs to be able to generate electricity in order to survive long enough to be freed and come to the surface to start a new life.
