As a content creator, I wanna see what the community is interested in and what kind of content you guys want to see! So do you think something's missing when it comes to Splatoon content? Are there any video formats, ideas, etc. you'd like to see more of?

Lmk what you think!

I think tournament highlights similar to GRsmash and turndownforwalt would benefit the community a lot.

Also I would love to see more splatoon content that's just people having fun in open but edited and trimmed down. Kind of like a Lythero video but Splatoon.

Yeah I'd like to see more of that too! I really wish I could watch cut down versions of tourneys that only keep in the best games/highlights. Comp players, especially at the top, don't rly make videos about tournaments for some reason :')

I also like the idea of tournament highlights/recaps. There's too many tournaments to keep up with (and that's a wonderful thing!) and being able to watch an 'abridged' version afterwards would be amazing.

One thing I kind of wish to find more of (either they barely exist or I don't know the right search terms) are videos where players sort of vod-review themselves, but more for the audience's sake than their own, stepping through a game and explaining in detail why they did what they did, what information they had, if it went as planned/expected, and why or why not. It's so helpful to me to see what is actually going on in someone's head and why they make the choices they make in an actual game. I can read tactics and theory all day but I feel like I actually have to see it in practice and be aware that's what's actually being attempted for it to click sometimes.

I'd also really love more splatoon-themed podcasts. I don't even care what aspects of the game they talk about, I am just a podcast fiend.

I’m most interested in educational content geared towards upper intermediate players. I got to where I am (~2000 XP) because of educational content, but I’ve more or less run out of videos I feel I can meaningfully learn from. A lot of Squid School’s stuff, helpful though it is, feels intended for lower level players. Which is totally justifiable, I do think most educational content should be meant for beginner/intermediate players, but a little more stuff for people who have moved beyond that would be helpful. Stuff like Gem’s “Getting to top 500” video back in S2.
I get that it can be tricky to make that kind of content, and a majority of my improvement will have to (and should) come from vod reviews and diligent practice, but a little more content on YouTube would be nice.

The other thing I’d love to see, and I think would benefit the community a ton, is analysis of top level matches. Why are they making the decisions they’re making, how do they create and leverage advantages, how do they salvage bad situations through teamwork, etc. Something like Airen’s Valorant breakdowns. Combining that with a suggestion from earlier, why not break down highlights? A sort of third person behind the scenes. Here’s a highlight, and here’s how the team set up and executed it. I think those kinds of things would help make competitive play more visible to the community, which would go a long way.

Lastly, also working towards more community engagement with competitive play, Turn Down for Walt style tournament news. Here’s a tournament that’s coming up, here’s its significance, here are some things to look out for. That sort of happens every once in awhile with Gem, but I think stuff like that could really help keep people in the loop and boost tournament viewership.

From my perspective, I personally feel like there isn’t a whole lot of discussion of gameplay updates from a casual perspective. When I go online and see the perspectives of what people think of certain maps for example, I feel like I only hear about what people think from a competitive play perspective. It feels frustrating for me because it just makes me feel kind of alone. Like, a map can be good for fun but bad for comp and that kind of thing is valid too right??? right???? 😅😅😅😅😅

I think that’s definitely true, but becomes less true the better you get at the game. When I first started playing Splatoon 2 I loved maps like Kelp Dome, but as I got better at the game its flaws became more relevant to me and I started hating it. The maps that are bad for comp are bad for a reason, and the better you get the more apparent those flaws become. But I totally agree there feels like a lack of casual conversation about Splatoon.

This, the only content I'm interested in is content geared towards the competitive scene, because theres a severe lack of post event coverage videos/general advice/etc that people like Gem/Prochara cover as a niche

for the competitive/competitive adjacent side: I'd love to see videos that take cues/inspiration from those "How it FEELS to play [class]" tf2 videos from a couple years ago. Hit a good balance between being genuinely entertaining (I've never actually played tf2 and I give 'em a rewatch now and again) and some sprinkles of general advice for "competitive gamefeel" which I think is one of those things that not enough people talk about - by competitive gamefeel I mean stuff like positioning, weapon strengths/weaknesses, and applying all that off the cuff/in media res. Just because I may know in theory that [weapon] should be doing [role] doesn't mean I will be thinking of that in the middle of a game (but maybe that's the ADHD speaking...)

for casual/casual adjacent side: I think a lot of it comes down to the individual personality & "style" of videos. I love watching stuff that's a group of friends playing together & chatting, or just one person playing solo but engaging with chat, et al. I'd also love watching more heavily edited stuff (like those "[weapon] is bad" videos by Sampling Boot.)

Personally disagree, theres a point where the only difference between "competitive" and "casual" as labels boils down to different mindsets when dealing with objective data.

Data updates and map overviews and weapon comp videos are like, the most analytical and least opinionated video type I can think of: its not a full binary of "yes this is good/no this is not good" but theres usually at least some consensus at the end of the day because what people are going over is an objective thing.

Ditto this. If I saw a video of a tournament bracket recap I would absolutely feel FOMO and try to join the next version.

We definitely need more bite sized videos like this

I agree with you. I think generally the pipeline is that everyone starts off as casual, but as they get more invested in the game eventually people start dipping into the comp scene and learn more about best tactics and such to the point that they start looking at things like maps from a comp-like perspective. That’s why, like you said, “the better you get the more apparent those flaws become”

omegazidan does this but it's pretty much just limited to wiper and carbon, really wish more great players from all sorts of weapons would try their hand at a basic level of content creation like this. but they got scrims to run and priorities outside of that, unfortnuately.

I 200% second this this is literally what I was about to say damn! (really like the splat talks podcast by Gus)

Uhhh I guess I'll add top player or team introductions! Toyoben did this a little and I think it's a really cool format to get to know top teams as more than just their name and weapons, and it's just fun hearing them messing around while answering silly questions

I've noticed no one is doing Salmon Run content anymore, ever since Hazmy moved on no one else stepped in. Though perhaps that's attributable to the lack of meaningful content updates, Nintendo has barely done anything with the mode since launch.

I make a ton of SR content but it is, admittedly, quite hard to be creative with it since there's not much content I haven't already talked about. Other people who cover SR probably feel the same way

Mainly advice/improvement content thats oriented towards solo play instead of comp. Maybe even stuff like tierlists thats made for solo. Ik solo is comsidered a bigger deal in jp, so im sure theres imspiration to be taken from there.
Idk if this is the sort of area you are knowledgeable in, but content that compares solo and competetive play would be interesting. Like, most guides, meta discussion, theorycrafting, etc, are about competetive organized play, which can be translated towards solo play, but if there was a way for people to better understand how to translate that, it would be really helpful and apply to more people than comp content does
