Honestly, I disagree with the idea that we didn't get what the trailer promised, because, functionally, the trailer showed barely anything. I'm personally firmly in the camp that Side Order was basically exactly what I wanted from it, and while yes, it could've leaned darker (Look at the one image specifically that clearly draws inspiration from concepts of longterm nuclear warning imagery), but I think a lot of the idea that Side Order "didn't deliver" on the concepts in the trailer is simply that it gave us little and we sat with that for a while.

If I had to pick something from the trailer to point to as something that I wish made the final product? Well, maybe I'm crazy but I swear you can hear an engine revving in the end of the trailer music, while Marina can be heard talking. Show us Marina's motorcycle, dammit! You can't tell us she has one and never show us!

yeahh seconding catalyst here, we can speculate and debate about what happened behind the scenes in development but concept art doesn't necessarily = ideas that were 100% meant to be in the game

...that being said, incorporating some of the 'darker'/more serious ideas from that first trailer could be a fun creative exercise, and it's something i've thought about in relation to my (already darker as-is...) personal agent-OC lore surrounding side order. even if i said in the other thread that doing so would give me a high fever complete with Visions.

You know what's something that is currently in the game that does sound like an engine revving? The Hydra Splatling.
Maybe it's not a motorcycle, maybe it's Marina going back into her Octarian army roots and charging up a big, chunky Splatling <3

I'm choosing to believe you, especially with her sick as hell keyboard Splatling in the art book. Marina retired Splatling main is REAL and TRUE

I think it's pretty clear that the developers had much bigger plans for Side Order originally, but likely had to scale back those plans due to Splatoon 3's troubled development cycle. The Alterna story mode also probably ran into the same scale back, considering the height of Splatoon 3's development was interrupted by a debilitating world event. With the developers essentially playing catch-up with Splatoon 3's development throughout the entire update cycle, it's unsurprising that developing an entire DLC single player expansion was too much and had to be cut down. Considering it was supposed to release in Spring 2024 and released two months early at minimum in February, I think the development team cut their losses, polished what they had, and released Side Order as is early.

My overall opinion of Splatoon 3 is that the game is heavily distorted from what it was originally meant to be thanks to factors outside of Nintendo's control. It's unfortunate, but I think there will be a silver lining someday.
