The minority who are angry at Splatoon are probably under this insane concept that Splatoon is going to muscle in on the competitive Nintendo game thing. Because....reasons.
I haven't seen anything like that either. Every person I know that us excited about Splatoon is a Smash player. My local area is even thinking about doing Splatoon setups and stuff at the Smash tournaments
A vocal minority is the easiest to hear. I think this has been experienced in the past with plenty of other games. Much like public media, politics -anything really- those who are the loudest are heard, not the ones who don't talk.
