Regional matchmaking would probably have problems in squad battles. It looks like only very few people are playing squads in comparison to Turf and solo queue. It happened often enough that my team got grouped against the same enemy team multiple times in one session. So for squad battles I'm totally fine with global matchmaking.
But this looks different for the solo queues. And as it comes down to solo ranked battle being the most important mode (with all the S/S+ shenanigans going on here) Nintendo should offer an option for regional matchmaking at least here. I'm really sick of japanese players lagging the hell out of some rooms. It might not be such a great deal for players from the US (especially west coast, as these are rather close to Japan), but I can tell you it's really bad here in Europe to play in rooms with 5+ japanese players all the time.
