ForewordWelcome! I'm Ikieri, an Inkrush Brusher, and I'll be here talking all about exactly what to wear and how to show off your stuff when running an Inkbrush! Remember, this is just a guide and you're free to use whatever works best with you. Try out whatever catches your eye and more importantly, have fun! (This is my first time creating a guide, so i'll be updating this as much as possible, feel free to leave any suggestions down below!)
OverviewFirst and foremost, if you're going to use an Inkbrush take a good look at this guide. It'll teach you the ins and outs of the Inkbrush. Done reading? Great! There are plenty more where that came from so seat up and let's read!
The Inkbrush is primarily a close-range weapon, so you'll have to get up and close into your opponents range in order to hit them at its sweetspot. You should take the time to test it out in the test area, get a good feel of how you're going to use it, practice hitting the dummies and Splatdashing (-jumping before splatting the ground and swimming). Jumping before firing will increase your range and it'll make you a harder target to hit, so practice this well and It'll help in the long run.
You'll find that playing with the Inkbrush is a very unique weapon in that it's the only roller that has the highest movement speed in the game yet doesn't have the range as other guns do. This weapon requires you to get up close and personal to a very much sword-like range. It also uses projectiles that arc downward so getting the high ground is still a viable tactic.
In order to take advantage of this weapon you'll need the right equipment, and that's what this guide is for. Let's get started!
Just Splat Em! - Pure Inkage Build Button mash that ZR! It takes at least 3 hits to splat somebody so always make sure when engaging an opponent you keep this in mind. It'll be very difficult to fight opponents head-on unless you're barraging them with ink from all angles. Spread your ink out before fighting them and you'll have the advantage!
*It's usually best to pick out your opponents beforehand, so when choosing your enemies, rollers will generally be most vulnerable.
Pros and Cons
- Amazing for Turf War
- Allows for Longer Trails
- Longer Sustainability
- Not much offensive support
- Easier to Target
- Doesn't Specialize in anything
This Loadout will cover Ink Saver Main as it gives you more ink to cover ground. Plus, when facing opponents who are completely dominating you'll have the ability to charge into enemy territory. So make sure you have someone following you when you do this, it's hard to fight alone without anyone backing you up!
Recommended Gear:Cost to Buy: ¢13, 100
Short Beanie (Inkline) - Ink Saver Main / Defence Up
Black Layered LS (Squidforce) - Ink Saver Main / Damage Up
Blue Moto Boots (Rockenberg) - Ink Res. Up / Run Speed Up
Cost to Upgrade:¢120, 000
RUN, RUN, RUN! - Sonic Sprayer Build / Lone WolfGotta go fast! The Inkbrush is the fastest weapon in the game. You can use that speed to do multiple things; run circles about your opponents, create paths for both advancing and retreating, or even lead the way for a massive team attack! The reason I say this is a lone wolf build is because you can't rely on anyone else to do this job and you'll generally be by yourself when facing off. Try this build if you wanna be more risky.
*When inking a line into enemy territory, there will be times you'll bump into somebody so make sure to plan ahead of time. The roll attack only does 20 damage, so be quick to follow up!
Pros and Cons
- Very Stealthy
- Great at Sneak Attacks
- Saboteur Role
- Little Survivability
- Slow Super Jumps
- Once spotted it's hard to retaliate
This Loadout will use Cold Blooded instead of Ninja Squid since you'll want to keep your position hidden when sneaking in or facing off, Stealth Jump because your job is to stay alive while supporting, and Opening Gambit will help to lead the start of battle and gain momentum.
Recommended Gear:Cost to Buy: ¢3, 500
B-ball Headband (Zink)- Opening Gambit + Quick Super Jump
Sage Polo (Splash Mob) - Cold Blooded + Ink Saver Main
Cherry Kicks (Rockenberg) - Stealth Jump + Run Speed Up
Cost to Upgrade: ¢150, 000
Special Sprinkler Extrodinaire! - Turf Coverer / Inkstriker BuildThe Sprinkler. A very underused sub weapon, but ultimately the best for covering turf. It's literally the only weapon that will pay for your ink back PLUS INTEREST. Not only will it recharge your special, but it also double as a turret, hitting places people wouldn't be able to on their own. Back against the wall? Place a sprinkler on it, and it can be bait while you escape scott-free. I can't stress how useful this is. Toss one behind your opponent and watch them shoot at it while you rush up to them and hit them from behind! If they ignore it, free gravy! Oh, and here's a guide for good locations to place them, it really helps!
*The worst part about the sprinkler is that it can also kill. See a landing marker? Place one of these bad boys on it and watch them splat. Try not to laugh too hard at them alright?
Pros and Cons
- Amasses point like crazy
- Can create distractions
- Effectively charges Specials
- Relies on Sprinklers too much
- Hit and Run tatics
- Map Dependant
This Loadout will use Inkstrike to it's fullest potential, so always find a nice hiding spot before launching one. Comeback will be very useful if you're splatted to get the bonus of Ink Saver Main, Ink Saver Sub, Ink Recovery Up, Run Speed Up, and Swim Speed Up. Make sure to use those 20 seconds to their fullest when respawning. A fun thing to do while using this set is to throw a sprinkler into an open area to bait out opponents, and once they're done destroying it, throw another one right behind them. It allows for some really creative play so make sure to charge up your ink!
Recommended Gear:Cost to Buy: ¢10, 100
Tennis Headband (Tentatek) - Comeback + Ink Rec. Up
Choco Layered LS (Takoroka)- Ink Saver Sub + Special Charge Up
LE Lo-Tops (Zekko)- Ink Saver Sub + Special Saver
Cost to Upgrade: ¢90, 000
Spam It! - Ranged Pressurer BuildThere's a lot more you can do with the sprinkler as an inkbrusher and that's to annoy the hell out of your opponents. This set will work well with Splat Zones, since you have no other ranged options besided inkstrikes. It'll also rely heavily on the stage so pick good maps like Kelp Dome or Bluefin Depot where you can find good control spots.
*As you're spamming sprinklers, try to keep your location a secret and change up where you're firing from. A good hiding spot will be most effective, so find walls and blind spots. If you're discovered just run.
Pros and Cons
- Great for Splat Zones
- Good at holding down choke points
- No offensive ability
- Relies on Hiding Spots
- Opponents will target you
- Sprinklers can easily be destroyed
It's best to keep moving as it's generally a bad idea to stay in one area. Unless you have a great hiding spot, it'll be harder to spam. Tenacity allows you hide in a spot while you charge inkstrikes, and Ink Recovery helps with inking turf.
Recommended Gear:Cost to Buy: ¢11, 400
Sporty Bobble Hat (Skalop) - Tenacity + Quick Respawn
Dark Urban Vest (Firefin) - Cold Blooded + Ink Saver Sub
White Seahorses (Zink) - Ink Recovery Up + Quick Super Jump
Cost to Upgrade: ¢120, 000
Squinja!! - Assassin Build (Splat Zone)This one is a very specialized build, the Squid Ninja is all about getting those kills. Helping your team from the shadows, if there are any enemies incoming, you'll be there to support whoever is closest. If you're not at the base for recon you'll stay hidden (preferably at high ground or in the enemies base) to ambush where they'll be coming next. To make the most of this build, you have to learn how to use the map. This is critically important as not everyone will be able to do this. Yet.
*Never take a shooter head on, know your surroundings and take them by surprise!
Pros and Cons
- Great in a fight
- Reconnaissance Role
- Campy
- Once killed it's hard to get back
- Need good prediction skills
- Not as much Inkage
The Gas Mask is more of an aesthetic choice than a normal one, how else are you supposed to create fear in your opponents? Make sure that you're well aware of Super Jump as you'll be using it more than often. Knowing how to multi-task will help you as you're constantly looking down at the map and fighting at the same time.
Recommended Gear:Cost to Buy: ¢14, 600
Gas Mask (Forge) - Tenacity + Special Duration Up
Black Anchor Tee (Squidforce) - Recon + Damage Up
Red Hi-Tops (Krak-On) - Ink Res. Up + Swim Speed Up
Cost to Upgrade:¢60, 000
Can't wait anymore! - Time Saver BuildRemember the Global Testfire? There's a reason why Nintendo chose Quick Respawn Time as a default ability and that was to get them in the action as much as possible! Now that it has become an option you can abuse it to your hearts content! Every second counts in Splatoon and for every time you get Splatted that's 10 seconds gone. With this build, you'll be the most effective squid on the block!
*Think of all the things you can do with 3 extra seconds! That's enough time to read this sentence!
Pros and Cons
- Saves a lot of time
- Allows you to adapt faster
- Marks down enemies
- Relies on you be splatted
- You may make more mistakes
- Doesn't Specialize in anything
Now you might be wondering, why should you plan to get Splatted? Well, my good friend, no one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes. If you want raw potential, nothing can go wrong with this set. More time to play means there's literally more time to ink!
Recommended Gear:Cost to Buy: ¢4,300
Backwards Cap (Zekko) - Quick Respawn Time + Special Saver
Squidmark LS (Squidforce) - Haunt + Damage Up
Moto Boots (Rockenberg) - Quick Respawn + Run Speed Up
Cost to Upgrade:¢120,000
Ready to Fight! - Combat Master ClassSure the Inkbrush may look like a support weapon at a glance, but with it you can fend off anybody in your strike zone. This build is for the inner button masher who wants to see the enemy gone. Get all up in their squid grill and wham! They won't see ya comin. This build is very dependent on close range stages so be sure to pick maps such as Port Mackerel will help greatly.
*Remember! The Inkbrush fires left to right in a cone, adapt to each shot!
Pros and Cons
- Amazing in a fights
- Aggressive Playstyle
- Great if you don't die often
- Not much Inkage
- Little options
- Map Dependant
Now that Ink Resistance is getting a nerf, you can't rush in the enemies base without meeting slow down, so stay outta harms way! Special Saver is a no-brainer when you need to "save your special" just always remember to use Inkstrike often!

This build is very dependent on close range stages so be sure to pick maps such as Port Mackerel will help greatly.

More info and Map-specific loadouts to come... with action shots! -Ikieri
The Inkbrush is primarily a melee weapon, so you'll have to get up and close to your opponent in order to hit them at its sweetspot. Take the time to test it by going to the equipment menu, and pressing Y in the weapons tab. Get a good feel of how you're going to use it, practice hitting the dummies and Splatdashing (jumping before splatting the ground and swimming).
It also uses arcing projectiles so getting the high ground is still a viable tactic.
In order to take advantage of this weapon you'll need the right equipment, and that's what this guide is for. Let's get started!
Just Splat Em! - Pure Inkage Build (Turf Wars)Button mash that ZR!

This Loadout will cover Ink Saver Main as it gives you more ink to cover ground. Plus, when facing opponents who are completely dominating you'll have the ability to charge into enemy territory. so make sure you have someone following you when you do this, it's hard to fight alone without ink!

Blue Moto Boots (Rockenberg) - Ink Res. Up + Run Speed Up

Try this build if you wanna be Sonic.

*When inking a line into enemy territory, there will be times you'll bump into somebody so make sure to plan ahead of time. The roll attack only does 20 damage, so be quick to follow up!
This Loadout will use Cold Blooded instead of Ninja Squid since you'll want to keep your position hidden when sneaking in or facing off, Stealth Jump because your job is to stay alive while supporting, and Opening Gambit to lead the start of battle and gain momentum.

Clothing: Sage Polo (Splash Mob) - Cold Blooded + Ink Saver Main

Recommended Gear:
Cost to Buy: ¢10, 100Tennis Headband (Tentatek) - Comeback + Ink Rec. Up
Choco Layered LS (Takoroka)- Ink Saver Sub + Special Charge Up
LE Lo-Tops (Zekko)- Ink Saver Sub + Special Saver
Cost to Upgrade: ¢90, 000Spam It! - Ranged Pressurer BuildThere's a lot more you can do with the sprinkler as an inkbrusher and that's to annoy the hell out of your opponents. This set will work well with Splat Zones, since you have no ranged options besided inkstrikes. It'll also rely heavily on the stage so pick good maps like Kelp Dome or Blackbelly Skatepark where you can find good control spots.

*As you're spamming sprinklers, try to keep your location a secret and change up where you're firing from. A good hiding spot will be most effective, so find walls and blind spots. If you're discovered just run.
