Zoom in by pressing Q and it should help at least a little. Some people are buying tablet pens and such for their console too, and you can usually find those on sites like Amazon for about 5$.
I have a feeling that SR will be able to be played by yourself as an option, but that's probably just me daydreaming about the game.
Edit: Just reread the article and it does sound like that you can play it by yourself or local, but online will be an option as well (after reaching level 4).
I learned from other games that the smaller the in-game world is, the less characters it needs. The bigger the world is, the more it needs.
Having too many in a such a small space would be bad, but at the same time having only a few characters in a big open world would also be bad.
